I miss livejournal.
Another picture from the trip I took back in January: I spent a day walking through the jungle with elephants at Mandalao in Laos and it was pretty neat.

Wow I really just stopped posting here in the middle of a trip. This is the view from the top of Phou Si in Luang Prabang, Laos. If you visit, there's a nightly performance of folk tales in English called "Garavek" and one of them tells the origin of this hill, based on a story from the Ramayana.

The Pak Ou caves, in cliffs along the Mekong river north of Luang Prabang, have hundreds of Buddhas in them.

These are some of my favorite spirit houses in Thailand. I thought the two minimalist/modern ones on the left were neat, and the one in the middle that looks like a teak house.

Nagas guard most of the staircases at temples here. These impressive ones are at Wat Chiang Man in Chiang Mai.

Geoff and I took a Northern Thai cooking class from Benny's Home Cooking.

We learned to make a soup called Khanom Jeen Nam Ngiaw, Khao Soi, Sai Ua (Chiang Mai Sausage), and Larb. This class was a delight! Benny is a wonderful teacher and our food was plated prettily on a traditional khantoke tray.

Doi Suthep is a mountain next to Chiang Mai city with a temple on top. This trip is the first one I've had metallic gold in my watercolor palette and I'm using it a lot with all the temples.

This is Warorot Market in Chiang Mai's Chinatown, looking down from the third level. You can get pretty much anything you want here, including packaged food and a food court.

I drew this on the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

This spirit house in Talat Noi, a fun neighborhood adjacent to Chinatown, keeps the spirits happy so they don't bother people and so they keep the bad spirits away.

In Bangkok, I got on a longboat for a “very special price” 🤫😆 and visited narrow canals lined with temples, houses, fishermen, monitors, and egrets. This enormous Buddha was finished in 2021 and is being renovated. I can only imagine what it looks like towering in gold over the small canal houses.

I spent about 18 hours in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the way to Thailand. It happened to be Timkat, the Ethiopian Epiphany, and there were lots of people setting things up for processions. This is the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
