Pounds come from Namura’s balcony, and she grimaces. Ther ladies-in-waiting are here to dress her so that she’s presentable to Cal. Not that he ever takes a second glance at what Namura is wearing. Their wedding is nothing but political, so there’s no reason for me to be jealous. But I am. With every bone in my body, I hate that he’s taking my best friend away from me. I hate that our time together has been sequested to the time it takes the sun to grace us then raise over the horizon. Most of all, I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.

Amulets, which come from defeating or freeing a spirit, have some sort of magical properties. But they take just as much as they give.
That is the other risk of amulets. Just as spirits crave something human, amulets all have a catch. It’s why they go straight to the crown for mending. The shamans aren’t only finding their use, but what they might take. Just as the amulet Nehru used to become stronger and stronger, it decayed his soul.

I glance at Namura over my shoulder, and her smile is as wide as mine. We look at each other for a moment before bursting out in laughter. She grabs her stomach and swats at me until I grab her hand. Her laugh is heavy, the only thing about her that doesn’t match what belongs under a crown. It’s what first attracted me to her. That she didn’t care if her laugh was full of snorts and hollers: being born to a throne wouldn’t mold everything about her. “Thank the gods!” She throws her hands up to the sky. “Our mothers will sleep peacefully in their graves. Their rotten daughters have not foresaken them.” “Except for now.” “On a roof,” she continues and lifts one leg up, “wearing pants.” “The gods are weeping.”

Day #7:

He's a simple man: never lived up to the glory of his brother, abused by his mother, and infested with a spirit. All he wants to do is prove that you can be better than his brother ever was...problem is, the spirit infecting him makes him crave despair.

So glad I get to use my new WIP more. More words mean more snips.
I avert my gaze. The king has been getting worse and worse over the last few months. The Tetrad’s Oath promised that if a descedent of Han Khanj, the first king born under the four shards—flame, wind, water, and stone—was in power, that the gods themselves would govern Khanj and keep them safe from the spirits. If the gods knew about his condition, was that why the spirits were behaving strange? The longer the king stayed in power, would it only get worse? Namura just needs three months until the crown was hers.

Some examples are:

“Miss…Maev,” the king says. His brow furrows, as if trying to remember my last name. “The court has summoned you for your account on the death of the Lyvert Prince, Cal Alarie. Please recount in your own words what happened.” He raises a brow. “And why you were outside of the palace walls?” “And why she was wearing pants,” a soldier mutters close to me. My face feels hot, but I keep my chin raised. Part of being a courtesan-in-training is learning how to act. How to fake a laugh, a smile, an orgasm. I can sell this too.

I'm proud of this description I made of the door to a temple of wind.

Instead of a door, the entrance of the temple is a collection of chimes that hang over the doorway. There’s something off about the color. I tilt my head and study it. Most chimes are neutral colored: metallics, woods, the creamy whites of bones. But there are random black markings. They don’t swirl like how the puffs of winds are usually depicted. They’re almost geometric—a serious of slashes and lines. The shaman swipes them, releasing a cacophony of tolls, each note different from the last. He gestures for me to enter, his smile widening more than before. I frown. All the lines have disappeared, but I shake it off and follow the shaman.

I am not a fan of horror, but I love creepy things. Ghost stories, ghost tours, strange taboos, etc.

As for my characters, two of them appreciate creepy things because they love the thrill. One of them hates anything that differs from the norm.

The desert society has been abandoned ever since the seam fell and the spirits took over. Instead, there are unique animal spirits that thrive in the desert: foxes, scorpions, jerboas, and rattlesnakes.

None dares to go to the desert of Shifting Sands in fear of the spirits.

Jonas turned the corner and threw open the door to his office. Starling slipped through, careful not to touch Jonas, who was hovering closer than normal. “What is it?” He closed the door behind them and locked it before sauntering over to his desk. On the top of the desk, there was a fishbowl with a petal fish. Only the fish was dead, its pink body floating at the top. Following her gaze, Jonas made a nervous laugh. “Oh goddesses, I keep forgetting to feed that thing.” He shrugged. “I don’t even know why I keep it. It’s useless.”

The Desert of Shifting Sands exist in Jasut, a nation far from Khanj. It doesn't appear in the first book but planning on using it in the sequel.

It is said that the sands shift not only with the wind but also shifts people's emotions, wants, and choices as well.

She shook the words off. She had gotten exactly what she was after. His thoughts had flowed like a clear river: the war was over. They’d return the Ravamyn soldiers. A new Zun lord would be appointed over Ravamyn. It was a lot of change that made her chest tight. She was supposed to be happy the end of the war was here. That her brothers or father might come home alive. Life had been split in half: before the war and after. Most would rather find themselves in the former, but Starling wasn’t most.

I slide behind the wall. If Taiyun wants to marry sooner, it means Cishi put him up to it. My gut twists—they know. They know the King is sick and are making their move, just like Namura is marrying Cal on her birthday. Taiyun raises a hand and Ua flinches, as though she knows exactly what Taiyun’s slap feels like. I should stay hidden, evasedrop on the rest of their conversation, so that I can tell Namura everything Taiyun is planning. But there is something inside me that can’t stand to see the poor girl flinch. She is a deer—not a dralu, their spirit counterpart. Her eyes are wet, her eyes refusing to raise and meet him.

It doesn’t need to widen its mouth for me to know its a yurma. And it’s hungry for a soul. Every drop of blood in my body turns to ice. My throat closes up, not that I can even muster a whimper. I need to look away from it but I can’t. Its eyes has me in a grip tighter than man’s. All it has to do is roar, and my soul will leave my body a husk. But it doesn’t open it’s mouth. It stares back at me, holding my gaze, and stumbles forward. And that’s when I see the body behind it. The ice that capsulated my blood melts at once. From a trail of body paw prints, is a man, chest unmoving and eyes open. Green eyes, the same shade as Damaen’s. Cal.

I am 100% an ambivert. I HAVE to be extroverted for my job, and but the moment I get home, it's quiet, alone time (except for my dog, of course).

She welcomed all of it. The louder the rain, the worse the pain, the less she could hear her own thoughts. And she couldn’t bear to dwell on them. Not now. The haze of red lanterns hung through the mist, and one large cloud swallowed the island. To the east, the sun threatened to rise, a line of bright orange meeting the sea on the horizon.
