#80jaarvrijheid

(1/2) One more time!

Visited the small, but well executed #exhibition “De geboorte van de stad. Op zoek naar #middeleeuws #Amsterdam “ [The Birth of the City. In Search of #Medieval Amsterdam] at the Amsterdam City #Archives.

What struck me most were everyday items of common people, like leather shoes and wooden tools.

Actiefoto!

This is the Grote Kerk (Grand Church) in Elst. It has a long history of worship going all the way back to prehistoric times.

Under the current late medieval building have been found the remains of Roman temples, and before, a pagan open air place of worship.

Show & Tell!

For this #mapmonday I share this map of the island of #Urk, made in 1791. On the inset the newly constructed church is visible.

For this #mapmonday I dived into the map collections of @vuamsterdam.bsky.social and found this peculiar object. A set of aerial photos made by the K.L.M. (= Dutch Royal Airlines) for promotional ends.

Visited the exhibition #romeinsewaalschatten in Museum Bastei in the city of Nijmegen.

It is about artefacts found in and around the Waal river from the times of the Roman Empire.

Like this beautiful cavalry helmet, ca 100-200. It is likely thrown in the river as an offering for a god.

This colourful, and rather unknown, map of the Dutch province of Noord-Holland is my #mapmonday pick. It shows spots where the population grew (brownish) and declined (blueish) between 1937 and 1939.

Valentijn! On this Valentine’s Day, I like to share this portrait of minister François Valentijn (1666-1727) went to the Dutch East Indies twice to preach and convert. He published a 5 volume #encyclopaedia about the #naturalhistory of Asia. It remained authoritative until the 19th century.

Making your publications #OpenAccess retrospective can also pay off!

Last year I decided to open up a fairly obscure article from 2012. It is now cited in a recent study by Angela Schottenhammer on the role of chocolate and cocoa in the transpacific trade network of the early modern period.

Visited the exhibition Grand Dessert – The history of the dessert in Kunstmuseum today.

A very merry exhibition indeed. Everyone smiles the moment they see desserts. There was a thin historical line, but old manuals, recipes and tableware are on display.

New publication (in Dutch) about the history of antisemitism in Europe. The book takes 43 instances, ranging from Classic Antiquity to the decade before the Second World War, in which the authors trace latent or blatant antisemitism.

Just published! This historic novel (in Dutch) by Mark Boog is about a young German cartographer who finds employment with renowned 17th century publisher Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam.

Hopefully translations will follow in the future.
