My parents listened to so much Archie Fisher when I was growing up that his music feels imprinted on my bones. RIP to a giant of traditional music

This was such a thoughtful, reverent session, listening to and discussing Ella Hanshaw’s music. Attendees became fans and were singing along by the end. They wanted to take this photo to share with Ella’s family ellahanshaw.bandcamp.com/album/ella-h...

Though there's a lot of overlap bet/n @spinstersounds.bsky.social & my folklore work, the Ella Hanshaw record is the first to really bridge those 2 worlds directly. Excited to talk about that with 2 of my favorite feminist folklorists & musicians at the big #AFS2025 folklore conference this weekend.

In 2014, my friend & I interviewed Michael Hurley—via letter—for Lucky Peach, about what he eats on the road, the relationship between food & music, and just what is "the pie of by and by." Tho LP is no longer, you can still read it via

I guess it's true--the one & only Michael Hurley has made his last long journey home. He was my friend and penpal, an incredible songwriter and complicated person, and I know I'll have more to say later but am just sad & processing & listening to The Corridor on repeat now 💔

Was blown away by Scottish piper Brighde Chaimbeul at Big Ears this weekend and drove up to Lexington tonight to see her again. She’s on a North American tour right now—don’t miss!

A couple nights ago, I was watching the Karen Dalton doc by Swiss artist Emmanuelle Antille, and in one scene, Peter Walker is going through KD's papers & song notes. The camera stopped on one page in particular and I was like wait a second...those are Michael Hurley songs! (Eyes Eyes & O My Stars)

Headed to Knoxville next week to work w/UT's Appalachian Justice Research Center students, who are all reading Making Our Future! I'll also be doing a public talk on Friday, 2/14. Feels like a good time to discuss the role of grassroots culture in the fight for justice in Appalachian communities.
