failed physics professor
When I called him out (in the email thread to all profs in the department) and stated that sharing the article made me feel unsafe as a trans person I was accused of lying about my feelings to 'win the argument'. Other profs acted as if the blatant transphobia was some sort of subtle hidden message.

The department has multiple senior professors who are outspoken bigots, using departmental emails to complain about accommodations for students with learning disabilities, and to share op-eds that blamed trans people, BIPOC, and other marginalized group for the downfall of academia.

I know and have seen many students who have had worse experiences, not just at UMich. Those are not my stories to tell, but I will deeply encourage anyone with some amount of power in the academic physics community to listen to your students when they tell you they are being hurt.

I genuinely don't know if I could have succeeded as a professor. I am frankly, very mentally ill and am currently having trouble taking care of myself. However, there is a large amount of organizational support that could have helped me and that wasn't present.

I discussed the lack of mentoring with my chair, along with my mental health struggles, and his response was to compare my functioning level to his son's, and remarked that at least I was high functioning. The time around this meeting was the closest I've ever been to killing myself.

A promising physicist who was given a $1M+ startup suddenly quit their job, and, institutionally, no one cared. I had not received formal or informal mentoring for nearly a year and a half. I was visibly struggling, and no one noticed or cared.

I resigned my post and abandoned my lab at the end of 2024. Other than some very basic administrative back and forth to sort out my health insurance and support for my graduate students, there was no effort from the chair and department to understand why.

it's concerning that someone with the platform and reputation that Hank has is stating 'facts' without including any proof or citations. as far as i can tell he is spreading misinformation, but perhaps there are other sources which agree with his statement, i'm not here pretending to be an expert.

this NIH article which analyzes a 2008 survey finds that cost, time, and a lack of health insurance are leading reasons for avoiding medical care. the closest to the reason you've stated is 'fear of bad news' which is 1/10 as common as cost.
