Mierle Laderman Ukele made this point at the Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, CT) in 1973. Extractive capitalism does not value the invisible work of maintenance. Her performance demonstrated the feminine-coded care that makes institutions—families, museums, and societies—work.

I think this might be selection bias. It's hard to identify who might be most important right now, but the photographers and theorists I think of as defining the field are acutely interested in fusing process, form, and content. Check out LaToya Ruby Frazier, for example.
