I’m thinking about how there seems to be a fundamental disconnect there, about how she seems to think people are struggling with her prose because it’s ‘unconventional’ due to her AuDHD, and not because she writes like someone who can’t read fluently.

It’s not just that I got an early introduction to the western canon, although I did and I do think that was also beneficial. It’s also that I can register to vote, look up who’s on my ballot, and figure out which candidates are campaigning on what, all without help. Like that’s pretty important!

Think about it: functional literacy means that I can navigate job applications & offer letters, unemployment, car registration paperwork, all kinds of insurance forms, bank account statements, lease agreements, traffic signs, labeled food ingredients, medical records, etc with no or minimal help.

And yes, for all the ways in which I was failed, functional literacy is so crucial a survival skill that I’m counting homeschooling *in my specific case* as an advantage and even a privilege on that front alone.
