Without a credible Russian or Chinese military presence actually materialising, the U.S. will likely lose interest and scale back again—just as it did before, when it shut down most of its Greenland bases and ended up with only one remaining.

So if an “invasion force” shows up, it isn’t an invasion. It’s an expansion within existing agreements. Legally, that’s the status quo - not a takeover.
And let’s be realistic: deploying and sustaining forces in the Arctic is expensive and logistically painful.
