The heart of the gathering was a facilitated conversation in Mam, with live interpretation in English. The conversation will shape the state’s first-ever Racial Equity Framework,
a guide that will help government agencies embed racial equity into their policies, practices and decision-making.

The Racial Equity Commission chose El Tímpano to convene this session because we work closely with Mam community members through our text messaging service, community outreach and Tumil El Tímpano, our weekly Mam-language video series.

The Mam community, a large indigenous group originally from Guatemala, has a significant presence in Oakland, where many Mam-speaking families live, speak their language and practice their culture.

The more than 50 attendees, including more than a dozen kids, were welcomed with pan dulce from Chapinlandia Bakery and warm coffee. The event also included a Guatemalan lunch and a child-friendly space for kids who accompanied their parents.

After tremendous rain had fallen on the Bay Area earlier in the week, the clouds parted in time for Rayos de Resiliencia, and indeed the sun’s rays shone bright, much like our community’s resilience. ☀️

El Huarache Azteca provided free burritos to guests, and community organizations offered free screenings for diabetes, COVID-19 vaccines, and mental health resources.

The muralist collective, Los Pobres Artistas constructed sacred phone booths to ignite conversations, Peaceful Warriors Mens Circle led a drumming circle, @voiceofwitness.org recorded oral histories, and Taller Xochicura and @artogether-org.bsky.social led arts workshops.

The event, “Rayos de Resiliencia,” or “Rays of Resilience,” produced in partnership with Eastside Arts Alliance, brought together artists, poets, storytellers, and musicians to offer community members avenues to reflect, heal and witness their collective strength.
