These models can also be used to optimise molecules for harm and aid in the development of chemical weapons - I worry that it might make some compounds more accessible to hobby chemists and less savoury types.

They're also going to be extremely useful for pharmaceutical development, they've already shown promise in predicting the efficacy of drugs and coming up with compounds that should have similar efficacy as well as optimizing the synthetic pathways to get to those drugs.

Marketplace Tech had a small section yesterday on how Mondelez has been using machine learning for 5 years to predict flavour profiles for Oreo variants - meaning food scientists aren't getting fed up of taste testing cookies 5 days a week (which they surprisingly were).

The power of some of these models to recognise cancer from tiny markers that people don't notice (Maybe that 0.01% uptick in X across all these patients isn't statistical noise etc.) is going to truly transform detection methods.
These actually useful applications just don't stick in the public mind

Something I learned earlier this year is that New Mexico has a lot more tectonic activity than I assumed (Based on nothing I suppose) - including magma bodies underneath places like Socorro. Very cool to see that things are happening with geothermal.
