Well done.

One time I went into Trader Joe's and was overjoyed because they had Leibniz cookies, (generic) Fig Newtons, and Bagels Spinoza.

The other customers thought I had flipped out.

True (also less cringy economic stuff like relative savings rates) - Yet this is a nontrivial issue!

One of my core beliefs is that outside a certain bare level of "that person's well read, quantitatively adept, can communicate well" (admittedly already fairly exclusive) people can't really evaluate intelligence meaningfully. But confident people always stand out

What…?

Are they going for people who camp with spoiled cats who have watched lion in winter too many times and appreciate au jus - Anjou wordplay?

Seems a little niche

Seriously?

I don't know -

"You're not fighting a fascist government, you're fighting fascists who happen to control what is currently authoritarian-sh government" seems like it should come with a pretty strongly worded "here's why i bother with the hair-splitting" statement

I bet there are a few. Some of the academics I know spend a substantial amount of time chatting up wealthy people while not thinking too hard about the persons ethics.

this level of chatty with this level of ethics is weird though

You may be filtering out overly online Dems, but you may also be filtering out mid to low info voters who might otherwise lean trump

This is the same error (or same genus of error 🙄) that Chuck Schumer makes

"When Trump is really unpopular then we'll do something that makes the news"
November 16, 2025 at 1:54 AM
Or (and this is really an all of the above) business leaders who may be pretty good at managing their own little slice of the economy actually don’t know jack about economics in general, contrary to their claims

Waiting for Nigeria to threaten to invade the US for our treatment of Christians

Some version of this applies to large sectors of society right now and it is vital that it not be an accepted defense. It’s the “I was just following orders“ of partisan debate.

I think people don't realize the narrowness of a prosecutorial case.

The emails show without a reasonable doubt that Trump lied repeatedly about his relationship with Epstein and that Trump is a scumbag deeply enmeshed with Epstein. They don't show beyond doubt that he violated any given statute

Americans tend to brag about how little they sleep, and (anecdotally) Japan has a culture that valorizes overwork, so I'm assuming there's a large helping of that here

Chance to kill a bunch of baby Hitlers - if doing it once is good, surely doing it a bunch of times is better

Several John Mulaney bits come to mind

Most places have ratemaking principles that include scaling rates to ”cost to serve” which includes distribution costs, load shape and predictability.

whether these costs are allocated accurately is another question but this is generally not considered a subsidy
November 13, 2025 at 11:41 PM
Are you assuming cost to serve per kWh is equal between industrial and residential?

Shit I’m in the danger zone

None of this is internally consistent

is number of houses a conserved quantity

No?

Sounds like we need to get a bunch of people to build more houses. Wonder where we’ll get them.

The flip side of this particular brand of enshittification is that the stuff you're actually paying for (looking at you, apple tv) is so encumbered by verification processes that it's about 80% less usable.

"The president probably raped children. What are we to make of that?"

"Well, if you look at the polls...."

There is no hope for these people.

Terrifying to realize that in the national divorce, we got all the cultural leaders that weren't pedophiles or Nazi-adjacent grifters, and it's still kinda close

True for most well known musicians. Remember washington being Hollywood for ugly people? this is Washington, elite academics, and tech bros. (exceptions like Woody Allen for obvious reason)

i bet no Harvey Weinstein but at least a few people @karaswisher.bsky.social knows, eg
