Before there was Samarkand there was Afrosiab. A Silk Road town whose inhabitants, the Sogdians traded with China, the Persians and the Greeks. Afrosiab flourished for some 8 centuries before being destroyed by Genghis Khan's armies. Today there is a Museum and on-going excavation.
Siab River - Afrosiab was built on its banks Ossuary for a wealthy Afrosiab citizen. As Zoroastrians, the Afrosiab people practiced sky burials and only stored the remaining bones in these clay ossuaries. Remains of a richly-coloured mural depicting the Afrosiab royal family procession to visit ancestral mausoleums on Nowruz - the Zoroastrian New Year celebration The remaining ramparts of Afrosiab are still grazed by sheep and goats in modern-day Samarkand. Afrosiab covers a vast 20 hectare site.

Hokusai Museum in Sumida, Japan.
Snowy day and the front view of the Hokusai Museum. There're skeletal trees in the foreground, the snow cleared from the driveway. The day is cold and wet. One of Hokusai's early works featuring an Asian dragon with a kindly face and pale peach and blue body. The dragon's body forms a curled circle with its tail forming a figure 8. It rests on a reddish- orange circular background surrounded by many white-capped blue waves. Before he became famous for The Great Wave, Hokusai was developing a reputation for designing festive floats. Two of the festive floats he designed are on display at the Museum. They are made of lacquered wood and woven bamboo with intricate roofs. A float decoration of a blue wave and many white caps. This early design would later evolve into The Great Wave.

X'mas decorations from Barcelona featuring rows of traditional nativity scene figurines. The Catalans have figurines wearing the iconic maroon and blue football jerseys of Barcelona FC. The site Museum in Ancient Corinth has a wealth of funerary items. Well worth the modest admission fee which includes access to the archaeological site.
Sculpted rooster head caught in mid-squawk is a funerary item in the Corinth site museum. Greek Sphynx tomb marker smirks creepily from her post in the museum at Corinth. Classic Corinth battle helm made of bronze on display Funerary urn with wide mouth and body. Its base is circular. Top has cream coloured background, decorated with a bull, owl and lion in dark brown, interspersed with brown polka dots.The middle to the base of the urn is plain dark brown.

Mili Beach near Nafplion Greece.
Gentle waves lap at the edges of a pebbly beach in Mili near Nafplion, Greece. The sky is clear and blue, the sunlight is fading in the late afternoon. The beach is near empty except for the odd holidaymaker trudging back to the hotel.

Epidaurus Archaeological Site Museum.
Sculptures in white stone of 3 dancing women wearing long flowy outfits - donated by patients successfully healed at the sanctuary of Aesculapius in Epidaurus Ancient Epidaurus auditorium empty under a blue sky with white clouds. A stone wall at the restored section of the Abaton where patients seeking to be cured had to sleep. A dream would come to them with the cure for their ailments. The copy of the relief on the wall shows a "testimonial" of a former patient who found their cure.

Kuala Kedah Fort Museum - contains artefacts from the 1821 Kedah-Siamese Wars. Kuala Kedah was an important trading port. Its prominence triggered an invasion by the Siamese for control of trade in the northern area of the Straits of Malacca.
