peak dramaturg representation is jin dae-yeon in drive my car. he’s got his cushy summer chekhov gig! he’s got his cute little sweaters! he’s got such great eyebrows! he lives in a cute house with his cute wife and cute dog! aspirational multilingual king!!

16. MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (vincente minnelli, 1944) - almost impossibly lovely. as warm and funny and joyous and moving as any movie ever made. judy! margaret! the sets! the costumes! the color! the music! my god!!!
November 18, 2024 at 4:44 PM
15. A NEW LEAF (elaine may, 1971) - there is absolutely nobody like elaine may, as a performer or writer or filmmaker. this may be the most bizarre rom-com ever financed by a major studio, but it’s so relentlessly funny and surprisingly sweet. impossible not to fall in love with may and the film.
November 18, 2024 at 4:36 PM
14. MOONLIGHT (barry jenkins, 2016) - i know we all know it’s a masterpiece, but even eight years later, its very existence still feels like a miracle. exquisite language (mccraney 🐐), beautifully crafted imagery, and a pitch-perfect cast. the defining film of the 2010s, for my money.
November 18, 2024 at 4:32 PM
13. CLOSE-UP (abbas kiarostami, 1990) - watched this for the first time a few months ago and just fell completely in love with it. cracks open the very concepts of performance, identity, and storytelling to… create a love letter to movies? to condemn escapism? both? magical, compassionate stuff.
November 18, 2024 at 4:15 PM
12. DRIVE MY CAR (ryusuke hamaguchi, 2021) - huge in scope, intimate in execution. a love letter to cinema and theatre, a meditation on grief and art and companionship. a breathtaking, magical film.
November 18, 2024 at 3:59 PM
11. SHERLOCK JR. (buster keaton, 1924) - every second is magic! it’s ridiculously funny, it’s got some mind-blowing stunt and visual effect work, and it’s surprisingly sweet! buster’s masterpiece in my book, and one of the most perfect comedies ever made.
November 18, 2024 at 3:53 PM
10. AMADEUS (milos forman, 1984) - the phrase “feast for the senses” gets thrown around a lot, but it’s extremely appropriate here. the music!! the imagery!! the writing!! i mean, is it the best adaptation of a play… ever?? maybe so!
November 18, 2024 at 1:58 AM
09. SPIRITED AWAY (hayao miyazaki, 2001) - it’s probably the single greatest animated film, but it’s also one of the greatest films of any kind. as expansive and compassionate and singular as it gets. joe hisaishi, the goat. a masterpiece! nothing else to say!
November 18, 2024 at 1:54 AM
08. CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (orson welles, 1965) - as much as i love so many of welles’ movies, this one is my personal favorite. as messy, juvenile, romantic, and tragic as falstaff himself. maybe welles’ best performance, and almost certainly one of the great shakespeare films.
November 18, 2024 at 1:49 AM
07. CLÉO FROM 5 TO 7 (agnès varda, 1962) - my introduction to varda and still my favorite of hers. as joyous and exuberant as it is painful and sad. corinne marchand! the “sans toi” sequence! my god.
November 18, 2024 at 1:43 AM
06. NASHVILLE (robert altman, 1975) - kinda the great american novel, no? what’s shaggy and unwieldy on the surface turns out to be a razor-sharp meditation on celebrity, capitalism, politics, country music, war, guns, patriarchy, and everything in between. and my god, the cast.

05. PATHER PANCHALI (satyajit ray, 1955) - i know i tend to talk in hyperbole but i just kinda think this should be required viewing for all of humanity? one of the richest, most empathetic films ever made. an absolute wonder.
November 17, 2024 at 2:23 AM
04. FIRST COW (kelly reichardt, 2019) - impossible for me to ever be normal about this one. a film of such gentleness and wisdom. it hasn’t left my mind since i watched it four years ago.
November 17, 2024 at 2:14 AM
03. THE TREE OF LIFE (terrence malick, 2011) - an almost overwhelming movie for me. fills me with genuine awe and hope and joy. certainly not everyone's taste, but to me it's as close to a spiritual experience as any film i've ever seen.
November 17, 2024 at 2:08 AM
02. WORLD OF TOMORROW (don hertzfeldt, 2015) - sixteen minutes of bliss. funny, weird, devastating, hopeful, despairing, romantic, beautiful stuff. my favorite movie of any length, really.
November 17, 2024 at 2:02 AM
01. THE APARTMENT (billy wilder, 1960) - a perfect script! perfect leading performances! a perfect movie! i laugh and cry and cry some more!
