Like yeah I guess there's technically a feature where you can see random posts, but everyone I know who uses Tumblr stays entirely on their dash (with 'in your orbit') turned off, so it's literally just the people you follow in reverse chronological order.

It's not profitable so people don't spam, nobody's trying to become an "influencer" because you aren't making money and follower counts are private, and fandom circles run pretty tight which minimizes drama. also the culture is very much about blocking people you don't want to see and just moving on

I've been on Tumblr for years (though admittedly I was too young to be online when John was first there) and I have to say I think the biggest thing is the lack of a real algorithm. You aren't getting a bunch of rage-bait if you aren't actively looking for it and the vibes are pretty chill generally
