From my current series: And My Father Before Me. Untitled (for now), oil and cold wax on copper plate mounted to cradle board. 6” x 6”.
A luminous abstract painting on copper panel that reflects light back through thin layers of transparent layers of oil paint—Primarily transparent oranges and browns with desaturated red shapes and one strong, squiggly black horizontal element near the bottom. Some say that a large brown shape feels like a distant mountain. An elliptical yellowish shape hovers above it— the edges of the shape made prominent by marks that reveal the copper beneath. Additional small elliptical shapes, fully exposing the copper beneath, hover about randomly. Some of these shapes, including the largest one, seem to be leaking a bit of yellowish light from below, causing some to interpret them as a bit like jellyfish.

Abstract painting. Neutral whites and veils of transparent orange reveal small, twisting shapes that are primarily green, yellow, red, and orange. Strong black lines with variable thickness run in a twisting fashion down either side of the composition. Some people see seahorses frolicking. Some see shapes reminiscent of stomachs and digestive tracks. Some shapes are reminiscent of clusters of eggs. I see the dragons that my father loved to doodle. Two of the shapes that I perceive as dragons. One in greens and the other in yellow-green and orange. Their twisting forms seem to imply movement writhing with life. A detail of the lower right of the painting where the most prominent black line cuts through the composition. In this area, the edges of the line are softened. Fiery yellow and muted green lines branch off with one yellow one in particular taking on a vein-like impression as it is surrounded by a burst of deep red. The interplay of these contrasting values and somewhat complementary colors create a dynamic tension, inviting the viewer to explore the depth and complexity of the abstract world of my father’s dragons. Detail of the top right of the painting where it has a predominantly beige background with brown, black and green marks and veils of transparent orange. This area helps contribute to the overall effect of both chaos and order, reflecting the complexities of nature in a fantastical world where my father’s dragons live again through me.

Abstract painting with a strong diagonal composition. Focal point in the lower left-hand corner. Predominantly transparent white, deep greens and oranges. Some people feel that the dominant orange shape in the focal point feels like it could be the shape of a human heart.
