I have done too much writing and researching in one day, and now it is one o'clock in the morning and I am alone in the house and I have THE MADNESS.

There were two big influences on my sense of humour growing up: Mel Brooks, and Tom Lehrer.

If you've ever laughed at one of my jokes, thank Tom Lehrer. If you've ever rolled your eyes (more likely), blame him.

All this is his fault.

Part of the problem with social media is that it lets people you kind of like from a distance say the dumbest fucking things imaginable, and then have it delivered to your eyeballs in convenient bite-sized chunks every day.

It's like an advent calendar of disappointment.

Liz Truss killed the Queen, JD Vance killed the Pope.

Someone needs to make sure Nigel Farage never gets an audience with David Attenborough.

Went out to get the ingredients for a Key Lime Pie yesterday, and got almost all the way home before I remembered I'd forgotten the limes.

The realisation that they're pretty much the definition of a key ingredient didn't make me feel less like a dumbass.

I'm just saying, if the US really was dead-set on handing the entire US military apparatus over to a hard-drinking TV personality, the text chain would have been a lot more fun with Hoda and Kathie Lee.

#GotWoody #5: BANANAS

⭐⭐

'Allen Does Sketch Comedy' doesn't work as well here as it does with TTMAR. Adding the faint trace of a plot just makes it more apparent when the whole thing becomes disconnected setpieces in the second half.

It's alright, but the concept is better than the execution(s).

It took me, like, three attempts to not read this as the Boston Irish, Good Will Hunting, wicked-smaht kind of wicked.
I feel like you can support Trump’s wicked immigration policy, OR celebrate St Paddy’s day, but you can’t do both.

#GotWoody #4: DON'T DRINK THE WATER

⭐⭐

It's... fine? There's a laugh or two, mostly from Krojack (and even then mostly from the protest organisation scene), but it's an hour and a half of the most boomer-humour shit you'll ever hear in your life. Even for 1969 it's a lot.

Can't you just let me revel in my five-letter psychic moment for a little while?

I guess today's word should have been SALTY.

It is a terrible thing that Dan Bongino is going to be the second-in-command at the FBI, but that doesn't change the fact that I will never be able to look at his big dumb head without thinking of a Japanese square watermelon.

#GotWoody #3: TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN

⭐⭐⭐½

Is it smug? Yes. Is it funny? Also kind of yes! Woody Allen's rapid sketch/mockmentary style gets overlooked, but even though there's plenty that doesn't work here, a lot still does. That said, we're three films deep without a cohesive plot.

Am I missing something with The Apartment (1960)? Because I don't think I've ever seen a movie where the two romantic leads are a) so obviously supposed to be the lovable everyman and b) so inherently hard to like.

Sure, good lines from Wilder, but that's true of every Wilder script. What gives?
