Today's neighborhood #birds: A flock of wild turkeys encountered in the woods on my daily walk.

This weekend's pepper harvest. The Aji amarillos and Aji lemon peppers can be used fresh, but the ghost peppers and white habaneros get dried and then ground to make a truly weapon-grade hot pepper powder. A tiny pinch of this stuff goes a long way.

A local osprey has been hanging around a drainage pond in the nearby woods. I've been trying to get a photo of it, but it's very skittish and takes off before I can get close enough for a non-blurry shot.

Mainly I know it's nearby from its calls, which are very loud and distinctive. #bird

Praying mantis on my snake plant. This might or might not be one of the juveniles I released into my garden a few weeks ago.

My praying mantis egg cases have hatched! The baby mantises have been released onto my pepper plants to hopefully hunt pest insects.

Today's #bird: A fledgling bluejay perched on the fence surrounding my back yard garden. There are three of them out there back now, learning how to explore on the world, heading out on their own yet still begging food from their parents.

Our local snapping turtle has once again emerged from the creek to lay eggs in our neighbor's yard. The condo yard maintenance people are also here now, and we are trying to warn them off from mowing this particular patch of grass today.

#birds seen and heard on my walk around the neighborhood today. A Northern Mockingbird, showing off some vocal variety, and also a Northern Flicker singing somewhere in the background.

More #birds of spring. A pair of our ubiquitous Canada geese along with their offspring swimming in the D&R Canal.

Got the bitmap mode on my homemade GPU working now! 160x120 or 320x240 resolution, with color depth of 2, 4, 16, or 256 colors. The 320x240 256 color mode was especially difficult to get to work as it uses up just about every bit of memory on the FPGA, leaving nothing for tile, sprite, or even text.

More #birds: a pair of mallard ducks chilling out along side a small stream that runs through the neighborhood. I tried hard not to disturb them as I got this photo.

#birds seen on my afternoon walk today: a pair of common ravens on the cell phone tower at the municipal center. I don't often see these around here, and wasn't sure at first that they weren't just crows, but then they started calling which was very distinctively not a crow call.

This year's peppers are germinating nicely. Enclosed germination tray, heat mat and a really bright grow light right above them is working very well. It's still about two months before these can safely go outside here with our short growing season.

The neighborhood Cooper's Hawk on one of the trees in our yard. My wife is not pleased with its presence, it's been picking off the local squirrels. #birds

Successfully removed. It's very wiggly.

First time ever printing one of these articulated dragon thingies. Came out pretty well. Only a few more prints to do and I'll be all set for our holiday gift exchange later this week

A scattering of feathers in the front yard this morning. Looks like one of the local mourning doves got caught by a hawk.

In tonight's game session, the party begins exploring the first floor of the great ruined tower hotel, vestige of a powerful and advanced civilization that was wiped out thousands of years ago.

Cooking experiment while my wife is away: bacon popcorn. You cook some bacon in a pan, then pop popcorn in the bacon grease. Then you crumble up the bacon and sprinkle it and some brown sugar over the popped popcorn.

Little walking robot is assembled and walking. I still have a lot of software work to do (gyro integration, haptic feedback, eyeball display, pre-programmed gestures and animations, etc) but the basic robot is finally finished.

All of the remaining wiring is connected, and the core chassis is assembled. I still need to electrically test everything to make sure the power circuitry still works, and then I can start writing code to test the servos.
November 30, 2024 at 7:26 PM
All servos installed with signal wires installed. I'm going to do some electrical and software testing next before connecting the servo power lines.

Printing spare wheels for the antweight combat robot. TPU wheel hub and gear assembly, with a bearing pressed into the center mid-print, and then a low-profile LEGO tire pressed onto the outside after printing. I'm pretty happy with the performance and durability of this design so far.

Learning that it's easy to draw a concise wiring diagram, but less easy to get all of those wires to actually fit in where they're supposed to go in the narrow spaces between circuit boards and other components.
