Eric glared at the dark apartment window from his nighttime perch. Even from the roof across the street, it was obvious—empty, just like that damn hospital room. His grip tightened on the safety bar, the metal warping under his fingers. He could feel his fangs lengthening both from thirst and frustration. This was infuriating.
It was past eleven o’clock. His quarry had no reason not to be home. So where the hell was she? Eric grunted and hoisted himself over the roof’s edge. He dropped down the three stories and landed on the sidewalk with ease. Three stories might as well be a step off the curb to him.
He walked through the back breezeway of her building. The property was older and in need of upgrades. He’d never stay in such a dilapidated place but shabby properties like this had their perks. No cameras he had to avoid and no real security. Maybe he’d just wait inside for her. That could be… entertaining.

"Wait!"

Her upper arm was swallowed up in his grasp. Reflex took over and she shrugged him off with a firm yank. She backed away further down the trail, but when she saw the disappointed look on his face, she cursed herself. Doug might be a bit uncouth but he didn't mean her any harm. He wasn't Don.

"Didn't mean to mishandle you," he stammered. "I know it's brazen, but would you be interested in grabbing a drink?"

Huh? There's no way Doug just forgot their entire conversation about her husband. She must've misunderstood him. "Excuse me?"

"I just still feel terrible about what happened. You're probably going to be sore tomorrow. Cerberus isn't a small dog."

She crossed her arms trying to figure out his angle. "How many times do I have to say I'm fine before you'll believe me?"

"Let me buy you a hot tea, and you'll have convinced me."

"I don't think that's such a good idea."

"You have other plans?"

She shrugged. "Well, no." Her fight with Don echoed in her head again.

"I made you uncomfortable," he said, shoulders sinking.

"Your social skills could use some help but that's not it either."

Doug tilted his head. "Worried your husband won't take you fraternizing with the competition well?"

"That."

"He doesn't trust you?"

She frowned. "Of course he does." Crap. A little too defensive there, Cora. Her marital woes weren't Doug's problem. "But it's not exactly appropriate."

"Who said anyone has to know?" He stepped closer. "The café is right there. It's a public place. I promise, I'm not as scary as I appear."

Cora gazed up at his sexy smirk. Something in her chest rippled with excitement—or was it anxiety? His head tilted again as he waited, and she realized she should say something. "I don't think you're scary."

Doug chuckled, and the sound of it was like warm, sweet molasses. "Then what's the harm?"

She shuffled her feet while considering his offer. It was just tea. She glanced at him again. No, it wasn't. Not really. This was a mistake.…

The wooden chair splintered under Eric’s grip. He struggled to keep his fangs and claws hidden. He had to relax. Did that female—that human—just reject him? This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be. He forced himself to release the chair before his rage gave him away to Trish. A tight, artificial smile greeted her when she brought the items over to him.

“Should we have gone with blueberry?” he asked.

Sweet Trish gave an awkward shrug. “She was flattered, but…”

“It’s all right, thank you,” He glanced at her name tag—he shouldn’t know her name already. “Trish.”

“Um, here’s your check.” She blushed again and placed his bill in front of him. “She paid for what you got her so you didn’t waste your money.”

“I don’t consider it a waste at all.” He considered it a fucking insult. The gall of that woman.

Trish twirled a piece of her hair. “If you ask me, Jess is crazy to turn down a gentleman like you.”

He ignored her flirtation. “I appreciate that.”

“Try not to take it personally.”

Too late.

She glanced away nodding in understanding. "You think my spending time with the queen could help her remember you faster."

It wasn't really a question, but he affirmed it anyway as he stood and approached her. "Yes. I know I have no right to impose such a task to you Hecate, but I'm afraid I need to ask for your help once again."

"Of course, Your Majesty."

Hades paused. That was easy.

The goddess noticed his surprise and a small smile krept from the corners of her aging mouth. "Your love and partnership with each other is legendary among every realm. It serves as an example of what I feel gods who choose to marry should be. To lose that would also mean to lose the focus and dedication of our king to maintaining the order of the Underworld."

Jessica felt her eyes narrow. “Something tells me that there’s more to you than lame pickup lines and expensive suits.”

“There’s an easy way to find out.”

“Oh yeah?”

He leaned in. “Agree to another date with me.”

“Evening, Matthew.” The normally smooth, smug voice had a darkness to it. Eric’s words were dripping with spite. “You sound well.”

Jess had used Matt's condition as the excuse to get away from him. The hard edge must be from realizing it was bullshit. He took some pleasure in that as Charlie concentrated on trying to locate the vampire. “What do you want?”

“We both know the answer to that.”

“Jess isn’t available. She’s too busy trying to forget you after realizing you’re the psychopath that attacked her and killed her friend.”

The vampire growled. “Which I’m sure, in no small part, is thanks to you.”

“That’s the kicker,” Matt said. “I didn’t have to say anything. You managed to fuck things up just fine on your own.”

He heard a hiss. Charlie scrambled for a pen and scribbled something on a scrap of paper. She held it up to him and shook her head. Not here! Matt frowned.

“Give her back to me.”

He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t take her, parasite. Jess left. Just go buy a tub of ice cream and accept your game with my sister’s over.”

“Jessica will come around in time.”

He scoffed. “Have you met her? She’s pretty ridged when it comes to her values.” Dating a murderer would be right at the top of her fuck-no list.

Eric’s smugness returned. “Perhaps it would’ve been in the beginning. But after last night, I doubt things are so cut and dry for her now.”

Matt’s grip tightened around the phone. “What did you do to her?”

"You are Persephone. Goddess of Spring, daughter of Demeter. Queen of the Underworld. Mother of our children." He ran his other hand through her hair before adding. "You are my wife and I love you."

Cora stared at his light grey eyes and smiling face. Enough of this. "Let me go."

"What?"

She pulled his hands off of her. "I'm done playing your stupid game. I'm done with you. I want to go home."

Cora watched the king process her words before chuckling and shaking his head in awe of her. "My proud and stubborn goddess," he muttered.

"We're done," she said. "You promised after we talked you'd take me home."

Hades's brows rose. "When exactly did I promise that?"

Her stomach lurched. Oh hell no. "You asshole. You said—"

"I said after we talked I'd let you out of here. And I will. You're free to leave your chamber and explore the palace. It might jog more of your memories."

Cora could feel the rage in her chest and the hot blood in her cheeks. Goddammit, in her desperation she'd overlooked the most obvious technicality a child could've caught it. She stood there frozen, dumbfounded by her mistake. Her body shook. But this time it was from anger, not fear. "You clever prick."

Hades shrugged. "Until your memories of the palace have returned, you'll need an escort so you don't get lost. I'd be happy to guide you, but if you find my company disagreeable then I'm sure Hecate or Thanatos will gladly accompany you with Rohdea."

Cora saw them all glance at each other, then her. She scowled at them before focusing back on Hades. "I'm not going anywhere with you." She glanced over his shoulder at his waiting posse. "Not with any of you crazy freaks!"

As he moved closer Jessica’s back pressed against her door. She wished it could swallow her up and protect her from him.

Eric cursed and she saw that same broken expression. But with a blink his eyes were hard and calculating, analyzing her.

“Your stepbrother told you about me, didn’t he?”

Jessica looked away. She could feel her body start to tremble but she wasn’t sure if it was from fear or anger, maybe both. “You’re the killer.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Jesus. He was right on top of her. His shadow loomed over hers on the floor and his breath whispered against her skin.

“He told you about my kind, yes? I heard him call me a parasite on the phone. One of the benefits of being this way; heightened senses.”

Just like what Matt told her. Jessica turned the knob and tried to thrust her door open. If she could just get some distance between them, maybe she’d have a shot at running into Matt as he arrived.

But Eric caught her and the door with ease. His hand clamped down on top of hers and he slammed it shut. He rested his other arm above her head, bracing it. Jessica tried to pull the door open but it wouldn’t budge.

“My reflexes and strength are enhanced as well. Another advantage of being how I am.”

Her hand shook under his. “You mean…a vampire?”

He stared down at her, his beautiful eyes unwavering but also soft. “Yes.”
