also didn't help that I didn't know anyone that was outwardly ace or gay when I was younger. Being gay was mocked or dangerous so no one was out, I didn't know being ace was a thing, and I didn't meet anyone gay until I was an adult.

Yes! I'm an ace lesbian. I spent 8 years with a man I cared for but wasn’t attracted to. I didn’t know I was gay, I thought attraction to him would grow with time, never did. Women around me stayed with men they hated, and everyone acted like getting married to a man was a major goal for women.
