cant get over the person who was like "i was really excited about this cannibalism visual novel but then i found out the creators were freaks who liked incest. can't recommend." what a fabulous microcosm of 2020s internet culture. Yeah, I was discussing it with a friend and they pointed to the fact that people thought that the creator was pro-incest, which is sort of a silly aspersion. Overwhelmingly, I think people who enjoy incest as a kink or thematic element of erotic works think that incest is bad - and that’s also a critical element of why they find it arousing. Some mix of the aesthetics and the unhealthy dynamics of incest attracts them, but by and large I think if you were to ask them most fetishists would say that incest is often abusive and nasty and horrific for its victims and that they confine themselves to fantasy and acts with consenting partners for that very reason. In order to have an actually pro-incest position, not merely a sexual fetish for it, one would have to think that incest is a societal good, a position that hasn’t been held by many since the heyday of the Hapsburgs. The ridiculousness of this argument becomes a lot clearer when you compare it to other fetishes. I personally love the idea of forcing a woman to grow breasts larger than her head and then mocking her for it in an overtly sexual manner before having sex with her, but this is obviously a sexual fantasy. To do this in real life (ignoring for the moment the impossibility of making a woman’s breasts suddenly grow) without consent and safety would obviously be wrong, but few would accuse me of being pro-nonconsensual body modification. The only reason incest stands apart is because it is a widely-recognized cultural taboo. Regarding TCOAAL itself, I think anyone who has actually played what is within the game as it stands would be able to recognize that it has a fairly keen eye on the realistic causes and consequences of an emotionally and later physically incestuous relationship. To wit: neglectful and abusive parents, isolation and alienation from peers and broader society, and a high level of codependency that brings the two into a folie á deux scenario where each sibling ratchets up the worst tendencies and impulses of the other. The cannibalism and murder also probably didn’t help. The game may be somewhat Hot Topic in its surface-level aesthetics but it is trying to actually work with the themes it has and give them actual heft and weight and depth.
