These are hardly the only impacts these books have had on me. Mortality, violence, fraught parental relationships, writing that makes me say "holy shit." All four (BC and GH count as one) have stuck with me for years, popping into my head without invitation. They live there now.

Bridge to Terabithia taught me that children die. The Giver revealed that adults can be the ones to kill them. Fifth Season showed me how even parents can ruthlessly murder their sons and daughters. Gildenhammer tapped me on the shoulder and whispered "Murder isn't the only way to be ruthless."

It's big scary.
