An offering of questions for anyone trying to build community spaces.

Who is genuinely welcome in your spaces?

If this isn't who you want to be... How far down that path do you want to go before you turn around and decide to do something different?
Last wall of text. I offer these questions for anyone trying to build community spaces: Who is genuinely welcome in your spaces? Is it enough to post a content tag, a sign that says, “wolves are here”? If you decide you don’t want a website full of wolves, at what point do you do something different, set a boundary? When problems arise and someone most likely to be impacted says “this is dangerous and here is why,” do you listen? If you get it wrong, how do you make amends? How do you begin to earn and rebuild the broken trust? If this doesn’t sound like who you want to be or the space you want to make in the world, then how far down that path do you want to go before you turn around and decide to do something different? Content tags are a useful tool for practicing informed consent, but they are not any kind of “get out of jail free” card. We still have to think long and hard about how to reduce or prevent harm, and to give a damn about the impact of our stories and art in the lives of real people.

More wall of text: In those cases, why is it not enough to tag the discrimination itself? Name the social force at work, the racism, the xenophobia, the misogyny, the transphobia, the homophobia, and other specific forms of hate. By contrast, making the term “race play” an official tag seems to suggest tacit approval that this is a place for anyone to play with race, to objectify BIPOC people without their input or consent, and really just rolls out the welcome mat for racists. It brings to mind that story about the anti-Nazi bar in Baltimore (which Michael Tager originally tweeted in 2020 and moved over to Bsky here). When you are nice to Nazis because they’re being polite and you don’t want to cause a scene, pretty soon all the Nazis know your bar is a place that is tolerant of their hateful, intolerant views, and their numbers get large enough that they don’t have to be polite or quiet about their end goals to be terrible, awful people. Everyone else leaves. And you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. (I would argue that’s what has happened to Twitter.) When you look at tolerance as a universal moral standard, it may seem like a paradox emerges. But when you look at tolerance as a social contract, then anyone who doesn’t abide by that social contract would not be covered by it. It is not ethical to be tolerant of bigots who are intolerant of marginalized people. It is dangerous. It also reminds me of the story from Adam Bates which I tried and failed to convince a nonprofit employer to care about years ago, shortly before quitting. It might feel good to say “all are welcome,” but if you welcome wolves and sheep then you’re going to get wolves. Anyone vulnerable to wolves who can leave, will leave. Why would they stay? “Refusing to choose is a choice. It’s a choice in favor of the people who prey on others and who refuse to acknowledge the humanity of those they hate.”

Technically yes, you have the right to free speech to offer a space for “race play” stories, to offer content tags and to define them. Whether intentional or not, doing so has the impact of rolling out the welcome mat on your website for racists. People have the right to leave your space and community spaces, either for a hiatus or permanently, for any reason whatsoever. You don’t have to like it, but this isn’t about likes or follows, it’s about safety and human dignity. In the above sections, Surprise Sex and Surprise Edgeplay, I compare content tags to signs on closed doors at a kink party. The signs let you decide what kink activities you are ready to try with people you trust. Here’s another example with a very important difference. Would you go to a party if you knew there were people walking around who think you are lesser than them and deserving of violence—but it’s okay for you to relax and have fun, the party host says, because the party host has prepared special official name tags so you’ll be able to spot them! How long would you stay? What would the state of your mental health be like as you finally got out? Would you ever go to another event with that party host? Wouldn’t you tell your friends to avoid it, too? More wall of text: I see discussion like “what if a minority wants to explore it?” Then that is up to that individual, and the language used for tagging, especially in structured community spaces, matters. Abigail-is-nancy shared some nuance from her project documenting size kink history, honoring the work of Black size kinkster Ron H. who created zines in the 1990s centering the Black body in erotic giantess art. He predominantly worked with a Black dominatrix, “who was extremely open about the fact that size kink dynamics had a political dynamic to them, and that viewing the Black woman as giantess was a way of undoing the oppression of racial hierarchies.” In the section above, Gender tags & avoiding slurs, I talk about how the LGBTQIA+ community has reclaimed the word “queer” over the years, but that due to power dynamics, reclamation has to come from members of that community. In the section below, Top tags to always use, I talk about how some survivors find healing in exploring noncon fantasies, and others never want to encounter them again, and both are valid and understandable responses to trauma. In all these cases the creative agency and control is in the hands of the people most impacted by the harm. It is absolutely not up to me or the wider community if a marginalized person wants to explore their unique oppression by using sexuality and kink. I know that I have explored my own experience of misogyny by casting villains with those beliefs in some of my darker stories. In those cases, why is it not enough to tag the discrimination itself? Name the social force at work, the racism, the xenophobia, the misogyny, the transphobia, the homophobia, and other specific forms of hate. By contrast, making the term “race play” an official tag seems to suggest tacit approval that this is a place for anyone to play with race, to objectify BIPOC people without their input or consent, and really just rolls out the welcome mat for racists.

However, I am a white woman and know from experience I might get some of this wrong—so I welcome feedback on this post. I strongly encourage you to read firsthand perspectives from BIPOC members of the community who are directly impacted by this situation and sharing their thoughts: bijoul33, samperage, spottedmenace, tinysupervicki, and softiegts are several. I plan to address the “race play” situation as an example, but also consider this discussion to be relevant to content tagging in general. Please understand that although I am fucking livid, enough to have worked on this for six hours today, I’m trying to keep an even tone for the sake of this resource and general clarity. Is it “enough” to offer a content warning? Can’t I play however I want, as long as I tag it? A tag means I have done my due diligence and we can all move on, right? None of our erotic fantasies exist in a vacuum, and whether you know it or not you will be part of a broader conversation. The words you choose and the story you tell already have a context. And an impact. In the situation I mentioned above, I see a dangerous disconnect between understanding the harm being done by welcoming “race play” stories, and the idea that a content warning makes it okay. Just because I warn a person that behind a door is something intense or painful, doesn’t mean that everything that goes on behind that door is going to be safe, good to continue, or without long term, far-reaching impacts. If there’s a situation or problem you don’t know much about, the best thing you can do is to center the most impacted people. Always look to the people who are closest to the issue and listen to the ones most likely to experience harm. Practice respect and humility, honor boundaries, check your own savior impulses, and do what you can to educate yourself instead of demanding resources and attention from people already stressed to the limit.) When BIPOC members of the community see a space that offers tags for “race play” it is extremely fucking understandable that they won’t feel any kind of welcome or safe there.
