This week the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia produced the last penny ever and I have decided to take it personally. I don't particularly care about pennies, although I do appreciate that they're a different color than other change and that feels special. Like the penny was a DEI hire in the currency market. Was the penny discontinued because of woke? Something to consider. Many people are saying this.

Now, we find ourselves in an extremely difficult situation. My father suffers from high blood pressure, and my mother has chronic heart disease. In Gaza, medications are scarce, and medical care is almost non-existent due to the collapse of the healthcare system, which only increases their suffering. We have experienced immense pain and loss, including the death of my uncle and two aunts during this genocide. Despite all of this, we continue to hold onto hope, knowing that even in the darkest times, there is light in our memories and our resilience. We hold onto our love and compassion, and we try to smile amidst the pain. However, the need for support has become urgent, and I require your help to meet the basic needs of my family and ensure our survival in a safe place.

I confess that Mamdani, whom I ranked second to Brad Lander in my own primary vote, gives me rare hope at a time when I, like so many others, have soured on the Democratic old guard. After the primary, I was curious to meet him and did at the Brooklyn home of a mutual friend. What I saw is what he projects in his campaign. A smart, focused guy who listens to others and welcomes tough questions; who is transparent and consistent on the core political convictions that guide him; who is not an ideologue or a glib Pez dispenser of consultantspeak; and, no less important, who knows what he doesn’t know.

Weiss was the New York Times columnist who couldn’t get a job on The View. The alleged reason was she didn’t test well with audiences, which is embarrassing because Meghan McCain got a job there and so did Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Weiss also couldn’t actually get canceled when the cancel culture grift was good. So she walked off the job, pretending she was being silenced. Then she used that notoriety to found the Free Press, which became a success because it’s been backed by the dollars of a billionaire class that is still utterly livid that five years ago, for three months, America said “Black lives matter.” The billionaires may never recover.

bcg has recently faced criticism of its own over its work with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an Israeli-American aid initiative, which reportedly included modelling the cost of relocating Palestinians from the war-torn region. bcg has fired the two partners responsible and disavowed the work, which it says was unauthorised. A tightening of controls will probably follow, which might slow the firm down. But if it doesn’t, bcg is on track to become the strategy trio’s top dog by revenue in 2027.

One friend in Gaza told me he only wished to live in peace, away from conservatism, religious extremism and war. I later discovered he lost both of his parents and his brother, as well as cousins, in Israel’s onslaught. Another friend from Jerusalem told me he had a message for the west: that freedom comes in many layers. “We are under occupation and facing an ongoing genocide,” he said. “So the first layer is simply to exist.” We can imagine and hope for a just, safe world for queer Palestinians to flourish in. Though there are some vibrant, if quieter, queer communities across the Middle East, there is still persecution. But if the goal is for queer Palestinians to live in an open, tolerant society, then they need first to survive Israel’s aggression. There can be no Pride under occupation.

Many of the people who feel we’re a city at war have the least skin in the game. They’re by and large wealthy Republicans or centrist Democrats who rarely (if ever) ride the bus, haven’t had to worry about rent prices in years because they’re homeowners, and don’t understand the need for city-run grocery stores because they’ve never lived in a food desert. They’ve never been without air conditioning on a day like primary day when it was 100 degrees, and they can escape the sweltering city summers to second homes by the beach or in the mountains. They’ve never been stopped by the cops, and rarely see them around their neighborhood.
