My dad is learning Italian too, but he's years ahead of me. I thought he could help if I get stuck; also help bond with him seeing as I'm thousands of miles away.

I realise it only means a bunch of sticks or a meatball, but I don't think it's necessary. You're not a bigger person because you use it. People of my generation and older have been attacked and worse whilst being called that. There's trauma associated with it.
