Buncha pigeons in the rain.

The seagull in the back is jealous of their camaraderie

Speaking of springwatch, the baby foxes are getting brave (ish)

Vivi is enjoying #springwatch

Look at her ✨

Progress! They're massive already and the first flowers have opened!

Incredibly wet day at work today but these soggy lads made it worth it.

Finally, some proper actual rain. What a relief!

And that brings us up to today, where this will be my workspace as I plant up the remaining plugs into 10cm pots to be hidden amongst [redacted mystery structure], where I think they'll look really nice amongst [redacted visual elements]!

In my research about their resilience to damage and general brutalising, I came across this wonderful reddit query from someone whose wildflower meadow had been too successful and subsequently damaged by a fox frolicking around in it chasing butterflies.

I'm pretty sure it'll be fine
May 19, 2025 at 11:07 AM
Getting them in meant the roots had to be separated, which was a little brutal in places where they'd really entwined in the plug, but they're already bouncing back from the initial shock and slump
May 19, 2025 at 11:03 AM
Luckily they turned up incredibly early and with minimal losses and breakages!

My only complaint was that they were a little rootbound, but that mostly meant they were that little bit further along and some were even starting to flower already!
May 19, 2025 at 10:59 AM
Next came the placeholder planting of some coreopsis seedlings and cornfield annual seeds while we waited the two weeks for the wildflower plug delivery, cutting it a little close for them to be flowering in time for the event!
May 19, 2025 at 10:56 AM
I was worried about the loose fabric bunching up and making an inconsistent width, but the more soil and plants I added, the more the planting area expanded to squash the folds into submission
May 19, 2025 at 10:54 AM
They needed the first layer of compost to be added before being spiralled, so the bottom would be evenly spaced in the trug.
May 19, 2025 at 10:51 AM
Final touches of getting the ribbons on and they're ready for planting!
May 19, 2025 at 10:48 AM
A hessian outer layer gave it sturdiness and better stealth amongst the wooden boards of the [redacted mystery structure to be revealed closer to the event]

(Peg placement was to test how many ribbons were needed to make sure it didn't just flop open and give up)
May 19, 2025 at 10:45 AM
The pattern and lining fabric both passed inspection, but the structural integrity of the viscose felt was not what I had hoped it would be
May 19, 2025 at 10:42 AM
This was the original plan, the only real change was that I opted for ribbons to tie at the top instead of spacers
May 19, 2025 at 10:38 AM
Like many plant enthusiasts, I've been captivated by the odd social media lifehack.

The Seed Snail is my favourite, and so of course I had to scale it up to a ridiculous size..

Hilariously underwhelming end to the wheatgrass root fabric experiments

They definitely got way too hot in the insane weather we've been having, so the germination rate never got over like 20% :/

I'm impressed with how much root per seed there was. Will have another go when I've got less on

Had a visit from the inspector today
May 18, 2025 at 11:19 PM
It's too hot in the greenhouse today
May 17, 2025 at 2:43 PM
Big day in the greenhouse today
May 17, 2025 at 2:41 PM
Usually seed snails are a much more short term situation, used for starting lots of seeds that can be easily separated and planted on

Lets go version 3 baybee

Soak for 12 hrs, in the dark for 2 days, move to mesh fabric in sun when sprouts show

🤞

Just hoping it roots into this mesh as voraciously as it rooted into a tea towel by accident

I love trial and error
