Rereading Camus’ The Fall, I’m struck by how we mythologize freedom yet build our lives around obedience. When confronted with existential uncertainty, we embrace hierarchy for its clarity. Submission defends against the loneliness freedom brings. “Death is solitary, whereas slavery is collective.”
