We have @elizaleftus.bsky.social to thank for telling us all about her visit to the almshouse in the Undercroft.

Her description of what she saw can be read in the alt next below. 📖 🖊️
"- to the merchants hall in Foss-gate, an odd looking old building - there are 2 large rooms, in 1 of which the bible society holds its meetings - there is a charity here for 5 old widows and 5 old men - the widows have a living room with 5 little fire places in it, and a sleeping Ditto with 5 beds, placed round three sides of the room, as it were in wood closets, each just large enough to hold 1 bed and 4 shillings a month - the old men had their living room divided with boards into 5 equal compartments with each a little fire-place, table and chair, leaving a wide passage along the front of them that admitted light for the whole through one or 2 windows - They had also 5 beds in 1 sleeping room, and seemed on the whole more comfortable and more contented than the women the man whom we met in the passage and who shewed the little premises seemed as cheerful and happy as possible and I believe Ringrose who formerly kept what is now Etridges hotel, and failed - Gave nothing - but I, for which there was no occasion, a shilling to the poor woman that sweeps the 2 great rooms -" WYAS SH:7/ML/E/2/0087
