The essence of the idea of universalism (which universal rights partake in) has always been rooted in a right to choice (not to choose, but to choice- society can’t support unrestrained freedom-it has to, in order to offer anyone a free choice, preserve both the other’s right to choice &
& (for people of faith, even if only a faith in the right to choice) there’s a hidden thing that, tho itself is impermeable, permeates & authenticates true choice: when the autonomous spirit within ourselves (independence), respects the spirit of autonomy within others (interdependence),

Rosalia’s new album Lux is a total masterpiece and I commend it to you with the English translations as the most mesmerising music of the ‘pop’ genre to grace your ears for the whole of 2025. It’s restoring my soul.

I’m sure lot of ink has been spilled on this already (and if you know of some good article on this do share)- of how a great deal of medical ableism & doctorly closing of ranks around it, goes unchallenged under the guise of ‘functional reserves’.

I am utterly emotionally exhausted. My whole adult life has been consumed by this tragedy of ‘medicine’.I just don’t know what more to do to remedy it.Mum now likely in catatonia, caused either by head injury or stopping the medication that caused this degeneration,&might be the only ‘cure’ for it.

Extubation failed for different reasons twice. Hard seeing mum today with a tracheostomy. I didn’t realise the ventilator settings will need to be much lower before she will be able to speak with it. We’ve a long way to go before we get there. ❤️‍🩹

Mum seems to have turned the corner today 🤞 Extubation tomorrow. Expected that she will stay in icu for another couple of days. And now the long road to recovery. ❤️‍🩹
Still in ITU, still ventilated, still between life and death. Every thought, every future plan is if/when, if/when, if/when. Life on hold, her life on hold, my life on hold, our lives on hold. Every future bleak it seems, just some less bleak than others. No point planning. Each minute, a days sake.
Not sure when I will learn not to get ahead of myself. Intubation and chest drain now. And things suddenly feel a lot more serious. Not sure anyone’s seeing this but if you do send a little prayer my mums way.

Mum back in hospital/intensive care after horrific fall. Looks likely I will be becoming a carer again for foreseeable/recovery. I wanted to study & run an experiment at the intersection of philosophy and psychology. If anyone knows of distance learning, part time PhDs that might accommodate such

Law Commission 14th programme of law reform – and a vulnerable adults project on the horizon?
The Law Commission of England & Wales published its 14th programme of law reform on 4 September - i.e. its proposed plan of work for the years ahead.  It includes ten new projects (alongside existing projects such as Disabled Children's Social Care, on which I was a consultant; the final report for which should be out shortly).  These range widely over such matters as consent in the criminal law, public sector automated decision-making, deeds and the defence of insanity.

Having just been dumped, unbelievably by a disabled person, for disability related reasons, I’m currently considering fertility preservation options, & am particularly sensitive to the eugenical associations prevalent everywhere with avoiding having disabled

Really struggling with what on earth to do with my career, which as a non-professional, is pretty much non existent anyway. Seems everything I could potentially be good at is an industry in disarray rn or requires further training that has little security the other side of it or is unappealing.

SCIE sounds the alarm on MCA reform
The Social Care Institute for Excellence is not normally an alarmist body, which makes its recent (26 August 2025) statement on MCA reform all the more striking.  I reproduce the material sections below: Failure to act on long-delayed reforms to the Mental Capacity Act is contributing to preventable deaths, unlawful detentions and growing human rights concerns. The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) is the legal foundation for decisions made on behalf of people who cannot decide for themselves, because of dementia, learning disability, brain injury or serious illness.

This was a disturbing hearing to watch - and my blog raises more questions than answers. Was a court hearing really necessary (or appropriate) for this case? If it was, should the judge have adjourned as the OS requested to permit family to find legal representation?

Been thinking about illusionist idea of consciousness (within the hard materialist paradigm) and how this leads to psychosis being a illusion of an illusory state, a misrepresentation of a misrepresentation, and whilst I don’t believe in consciousness as an illusion for various reasons

I think the worst psychological aspect of enduring depression and ADHD together, is the knowledge that you’re wasting your one short, ‘wild, precious life’ on feeling totally incapable of doing anything vaguely productive or that might help you and instead feeling blank, sad and useless.

Just as a side post to this, I saw a brilliant, empathic, pharmacist yesterday who recommended I speak with GP & psychiatrist about those meds. One thing I said to him, which I’m reflecting on, as I am quite critical intellectually about this but that critique hasn’t quite landed emotionally
Any psychiatrists who follow me, is there a reason that when people are put on antipsychotics that they’re not automatically put on metformin/orlistat etc which are proven to help abate the inevitable weight gain?
