Some common terms & language around mental health concerns, suicide & self-harm, alcohol & other drugs, and disordered eating can cause shame & stigma, reinforce myths, and lessen the likelihood of help-seeking and support. Our words matter. More free tips resources: tinyurl.com/ourwordsmatter
Consider the language you use around mental health concerns. Avoid terms like: "Happy pills", "shrinks", "nuthouse". Prefer instead: "Antidepressants", "psychiatrists", "psychologists", and "support services". Consider the language you use around self-harm. Avoid saying things like: Attention seeking, manipulating others, going through a phase. Instead say things like: "Experiencing self harm" or "self-harming". Consider language when referring to the use of alcohol and other drugs. Avoid terms like: Junkie, crackhead, a drunk, alcoholic, pot-smoker. Prefer language like: "Person who uses drugs" or "he has an addiction to alcohol" or "a person who uses cannabis". Consider the language you use around eating disorders. Avoid saying: An anorexic, a bulimic, a binge-eater. Instead say something like: "A person with a lived experience of an eating disorder" or "a person with a diagnosis of bulima" or "they are accessing treatment for anorexia."
