My favorite event of the year is All City. The ten band directors from our six high schools work to create one all star band. Fun and satisfying for the directors and unforgettable for the kids and community.

I got to watch my youngest son play with Marshall Gilkes last weekend. Can’t decide which is better - being a band director or being a band parent. Being both is divine.

Band Directing and middle age. Just hours before an event on Friday I threw out my back. ER trip in my conducting attire, MRI, all five of my lumbar discs are herniated. Add it to my list of maladies, I guess. Bummed for missing this performance, but slowly returning to the living world.

I have been recording my rehearsals this year. I then upload them to my drive and listen to them while I workout that night.
As if working out and listening to band room recordings weren’t awful enough in isolation, I am combining them into a special band director self-flagellation routine.
