I like the Ars Technica fora more than modern social media, but this account exists anyway
This thread clearly doesn't have enough Mikes in it, but I don't have anything to add that isn't covered by the post I'm replying to.

LOL, I don't remember that one! "there's only one true Quintessential Onion Headline" was not even close to correct, but the lunar landing does feel like it's somehow a tier above all the other great headlines

Sorry, I've gone down the onion rabbit hole; I didn't remember the exact headline, but I do remember my friend who learned The Onion was satirical by how we reacted to her reaction to seeing theonion.com/u-s-to-give-...

It was way more fun to watch than I expected, especially that 4th down pass interference in OT
December 1, 2025 at 5:12 AM
Was wondering if you made it to the end… glad it ended at 10p for me, though I wish that last pass didn’t get batted down

Nope, this will be my first of her books! I've definitely seen her name mentioned a ton, so I don't have a good excuse for not having read any earlier works. I just put Nettle & Bone on hold at the library, since I have yet to feel misled by the Hugo Award. Any others you'd recommend?

This is an amazon first read this month, right? Finally worked through my library backlog, thanks to this rec I'll start Snake-Eater tonight or tomorrow night instead of spending 30 minutes figuring out what to read next :)

This is a case where googling before asking a question here actually led to the answer... I knew there was official policy but not who issued it. I'm surprised it's top-level NIST and not a random sub-group. Maybe I'd seen the ITL (Information Technology Laboratory) acronym attributed before?

Just emailed our IT help desk, maybe we can finally drop this particular security charade! Current recommendations are pages.nist.gov/800-63-4/sp8... while the old ones (and note about being superceded on August 1) are pages.nist.gov/800-63-3/sp8...

I am not into wine, but we spent a week on the pacific coast north of San Francisco, and it turned out we were like 20 minutes from Anderson Valley wineries… definitely a nice bonus to our vacation. So in addition to pairing with food, perhaps also pair with travel?

I think she is resigning days after she is eligible for the congressional pension (if Wikipedia is right and I’m reading it correctly, she needs five years of service then can start receiving it when she turns 62); news is reporting Jan 5 as her last day, and she took office Jan 3 2021

Neat! Is there a track listing that includes the name of the city each track was recorded in?

Awesome! Could you see the lights with the naked eye, or did you need the camera to make them out?

Not sure about the relationship between hawks and osprey, but I thought Osprey had decorative head feathers.
Reading the other responses, I completely disregarded the possibility this was a juvenile instead of an adult…
November 11, 2025 at 1:17 AM
I should’ve qualified my response with “I don’t know anything about birds but…” :) I think we have red-tailed hawks out here, which was my first thought when I saw your picture but a quick Google Image search looked close but not quite right.
November 11, 2025 at 1:17 AM
ps that's a great picture!
November 10, 2025 at 8:58 PM
My guess is red-tailed hawk but the color of the head has me doubting it a little bit. The head looks very hawkish to me, though.

Bubba Gumps? Does that mean Olive Garden closed?
November 5, 2025 at 11:51 PM
Yeah, that came across well :) I am legitimately curious about what the best example of this from 35 years ago is, though, and think Bluesky is a better place to ask than Facebook. Still not sure the best definition of “this” - kids parroting line from a generally inappropriate source?
November 3, 2025 at 5:59 PM
Not trying to lump your innocuous “the song sucks” into his “won’t someone think of the children”, I just think this is a better place for my musings than his Facebook page. I mean, I’m sure there are better examples of things we quoted without understanding that will seem awful in hindsight

… and T2 was summer before 6th grade so the timeline makes no sense. (Not claiming those movies are garbage, just that none of those 8 year olds had seen the source but it still worked its way into our slang.) As annoying as 6-7 is, it sure seems like kids being kids.
