www.smokelong.com/stories/anot... The joy of being part of @smokelong.bsky.social fitness is that you get prompted to read stories long after they were published. This one by @elissafield.bsky.social is amazing.

Declan’s first sight of the ocean, first time hearing the roar. Made lots of dog friends.

Me: Ok, Declan, you can go. Just stay away from the cats.
Declan: Sure, yeah, I will.

Drinking my coffee, reading submissions… and my little border collie puppy, Declan is wrestling a coconut. He’s herded it soccer style, chawed at it… but fought and fought to be able to pick it up. A hard battle, won.

I wrote this girl’s story this week — an absolutely PERFECT filly bred from my aunt’s favorite mare, one of my grandfather’s favorite accomplishments… that ended sadly. Thanks so much to workshop friends @smokelong.bsky.social Fitness & Flash Pack friends who gave early feedback.

Solid napday! This crazy baby doubled his nap time today when he discovered the joy of snuggling next to me. My arm went numb! What a 💕 love! Such a happy boy.

Declan, learning the ropes on his 11th day: Turns out, sometimes we do laundry.
His bigger excitement — for which there are no pictures — is he just had one of his first nose-to-nose greetings with one of the cats.

I see you made toast.

On the list of nice things about Declan is he is very gentle about food.

I just said, "I LOVE YOU" aloud to an empty room.
Me, I was talking to me.

After days of searching, I just thought of the perfect keyword (courtyard) to locate a really important scene I KNEW I had written but could not find on my laptop. Huge sigh of relief.

One of the coolest things abt being a submission editor for @smokelong.bsky.social is I'm just as excited to see work I spotted in the queue succeed as I am w stories of my own. I fell in love with 2 stories while reading for The Smokey--thrilled they’ll be published in this issue, out next week! 🔥🔥

O. M. G. Looks like a puppy is coming our way, end of June. Now I’m down to that challenge that hits me with every story: what name that fits this little character. We’ve chewed through family names (Fitzgerald, George, Ricky, Jimmy)… right now, Ryder is sticking, but we’ll have to see.

Last day of the semester, baby! One of the best and hardest and longest years, way emotional about all the close ties I built w students. Celebrated by waiting in line for half an hour to get this magnificent barbacoa burrito from @guatamigos’ food truck — a fantastic local Guatemalan restaurant.

I just submitted a little something. First submission in 5 months. So you know I'm stuck in, arms crossed, staring at it in Submittable, waiting for something to happen like it's a firework fuse or something.

Cheers, to all the submitting writers out there on this HOT last weekend of May!
