I made the mistake of trying with 9th grade but really should be 11th or 12th. Jemisin really respects her readers which makes for a lovely experience as an adult

I first read it as a middle schooler. Without spoiling anything, it introduced me to modern feminism, Foucault, Bentham, etc. in an engaging and age-appropriate way. It completely changed the way my middle and high school self approached the world & even today I think about it often
