I used to get lots of those scary letters about detector vans, as a non-TV-owning student living in halls in a little gated community which the detector vans couldn't drive into.

My first ever job was on the tills at Index ("The Catalogue Shop") in 1999. If anyone ordered a telly I'd get a screen pop up to input their address before the sale could go through, complete with a scary warning about it being a legal requirement.
