Parthenon Sculptures (AKA Elgin Marbles) plus other cultural property disputes, museums, art law, archaeology, architecture & Greece.
Formerly London based, now in Sydney.
Nigel Farage's support for keeping the Parthenon Marbles in the UK ought to help convince many who were on the fence (often through lack of in depth knowledge of the issue) that returning them is clearly the right side to take.

1. Apart from the areas along the coast of Turkey, most of the former Delian League city states occupy areas that are now part of the modern country of Greece. The claim for the Marbles is made by Greece and not the city of Athens per se.

The British Museum owns a copy an 1816 cartoon of John Bull with the Parthenon Marbles (not on public display at present).

More on the initiative from @goodlawproject.bsky.social to get the British Museum to better explain Britain's role in Slavery:
"It’s time for the British Museum to find room for slavery, so that it can tell a better story of how we got here and who we are."

Interesting how this new play has little resemblance to the previous new plaque proposals that were agreed by the council, but stomped on by the Merchant Venturers leading to the statue toppling.

The rest of the window display there is fairly eclectic - this place doesn't just limit itself to Greek sculpture replicas.

Was not expecting to spot a miniature replica of the Parthenon Frieze (although reformatted to a shape more like the Rosetta Stone) in a shop window in Redfern.

This page explains the emergency tag priority evacuation system in more detail. While it can't guarantee protection of artefacts, it is an important tool in sequencing collection damage limitation efforts.

This quote eloquently explains an issue that extends far beyond spurious insurance claims. Lord Elgin's later sense that he had saved the Parthenon Sculptures for the nation evolved out of financial necessity to clear some of his debts for instance. It was never part of his original motivation.

It is important to note here (because it is very easy for confusion to arise) that this case pertains to the modern Republic of Benin (Dahomey Kingdom until 1975), which is not the same Kingdom of Benin AKA Edo Kingdom (located further east in modern Nigeria) associated with the eponymous bronzes.
