It typically helps that setting itself is distinct enough (normal character is fantasy, a lot of the sparring stuff is more modern) that it can be distinguished in my mind more easily, which leaves two very similar but distinct concepts of the same character.

You're describing the similar balancing act I go through with my guy. He's nominally supposed to be quite competent, but I skew him overconfident so it can be satisfying to see him taken down a peg. I also tend to "AU" it in my head to correct that discrepancy. All that to say; you're not alone!
