Sunday afternoon slow-down with When Plants Took Over the Planet (C. Thorogood, illustrations by A. Grimes). A happy coincidence to see Lecanopteris mentioned - @thebotanics.bsky.social made a short on myrmecotrophy: ants nest in the fern's rhizomes, and their waste nourishes the plant.

Conundrum: I know the risks of introduced species, yet I’m still captivated by their beauty - like this Spathodea campanulata or African tulip tree. Not native to Madeira, but undeniably striking.

Botanical dispatch from Madeira

There are 3 endemic orchid species on the island: Goodyera macrophylla, Dactylorhiza foliosa & Orchis mascula subsp. scopulorum. Here is D. foliosa, spotted today while walking the Levada do Alecrim...isn't she lovely?
