“Moonlight and Love Songs” by Patsy Chingwile. A wonderful artist with a very distinctive style. I am so lucky because I bought this beautiful painting! She lives at my house now and her blue eyes follow me around the room.

The woman’s face has shading in a number of colours - blue and purple above the eyes, green below the eyes, then the red of flushed cheeks below the green, yellow traces on the nose and around the eyebrows. All of these colours are visible in small traces on the woman’s skin, on her arms, neck, shoulders and torso. A longer version of the title is handwritten on the back of the painting: “Moonlight and love songs are never out of date”. It refers to a lyric in a song from the film Casablanca, “As Time Goes By” sung by Dooley Wilson: You must remember this A kiss is still a kiss A sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply As time goes by And when two lovers woo They still say, "I love you." It wasn’t easy to choose, but I voted for Loribelle Spirovski’s “Finger painting of William Barton” in the Archibald Prize this year.
I love this painting for its looseness and freedom, the way it lets the light in.

The painting shows a man whose face is almost in profile to the viewer. He has an absurdly long hooked nose which feeds neatly and directly into the pipe he is smoking. An odd candle on a stand illuminates the far side of the man’s face. The man stares unflinchingly at the viewer with an eyebrow arched, as if to say, yes, I’m smoking my own nose, what of it? Magritte wrote of this painting: “The meditations of the obsessive, absent-minded philosopher can suggest a mental world closed in on itself, as here a smoker is the prisoner of his pipe.” Although the artist never referred to this painting as a self-portrait, it “bears more than a passing resemblance to the artist.”

What at first glance looks like rows of men in suits is actually one man in a suit who has been replicated again and again like a clone. The many copies of the one man have short dark hair and are identically dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and tie with black and grey diagonal stripes. They all stare rigidly into the distance through metal-framed spectacles. The overall effect is disturbing and creepy.
