My aim with this piece is to banish shame in autistic people, so we can all talk about things like this openly - about our strengths, our struggles, and the way even "supports" fail us in an ableist society. I hope writing like this makes other autistic people feel less alone.

Grounded in the post-WWII German concept of Vergangenheitsbewältigung ("working through the past") and linking this to the idea of truth-telling in Australia, I highlight the importance of knowing our place within history and speaking up about the horrors of the past that are slowly repeating.

I explain how sexism and ableism are why, as a 31-year-old autistic woman asking for psychosexual therapy, pelvic floor physiotherapy, and a hearing aid, I was denied all three and offered speech therapy and a support worker instead.
