Is it wrong that I even get excited by n=0?

I remember that paper well… being fascinated by how much information was buried in images that looked like pure noise.

You are not seeing the big picture Ed. Suppose that you are planning to do research that requires 1 month of MRI usage... yes, you can add that to your grant proposal, but if nobody uses the MRI, it will have to be closed, because the income for 1 month cannot keep it open. IDC is the only way.

Because what else is going to fund it? At a University, it would be unfair to use tuition dollars to fund maintenance of research facilities, or the utility bills for it, for example. At a non-profit, there is no other source of income to fund the research effort.

The idc pays for things that are not directly contemplated in the grant. It pays for the janitorial services, building rent, service contracts for instruments, etc. It is definitely not a ripoff.

I see... yeah, it does sound just like Facebook: "My pictures are mine, but Meta can do whatever they want with them and my information"

It is so infuriating... "yep, we saw that he is really nasty but did not want to hurt his feelings"

Yeah... that would be the natural place for her, but he would not put her in the Department of Education because he promised to close it.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I have to shut down the microscopes tomorrow so that they can replace the batteries for their respective UPS units (oh, the irony!!). I will also need good vibes so that they come alive from their medically induced coma.

I can totally understand... at one of my previous employment sites, they also changed it to what we used to call "Schwarzenegger paper", because it was tough, rough, and would not take crap from anyone.

This is kind of difficult to follow when you have an advisor who tells you things like "Why on earth did you think that was a good experiment to do?" (this hasn't happened to me, but I have seen it)

I do not see anything wrong with the article. They produced vitreous ice by condensing vapor onto a cold surface (a copper pipe cooled with LN2), and they determined the glassy character of the ice by X-ray diffraction, so it was not electron microscopy, as there were no EMs at the time.
