I actually did some legwork myself. According to Pew polls, only 45% of Dem/left leaning respondents favor laws that restrict athletes to teams that match the sex assigned at birth.

There was nothing to distinguish who you meant by "they" and blaming others for not understanding. Calling immigrants criminals is such a common MAGA take, and because this article deals with immigrants, that's the context it gets interpreted with.
