Where the lines go can directly affect who represents you and how many MPs each party has. Watch how the boundaries rotate round in this fictional town and the results change. Thankfully, we have independent Boundary Commissions, but their decisions still change election results.

You shouldn't need a PhD in psephology to work out what parliament would look like based on a poll - but without a fancy statistical model, you would just be guessing to say what this would produce.

It's remarkable how similar the voting patterns were in Norway's election last week and our general election in 2024. But they have a voting system that respects the voters, while we have one which warps the result. electoral-reform.org.uk/norways-elec...

Director of Electoral Reform Society Cymru Jess Blair appeared on BBC News this afternoon, outlining why the Government's announcement that the whole of the UK is getting Votes at 16 is a cause for celebration.

Our Chief Executive Darren has been quoted in the Guardian welcoming the changes proposed in the upcoming Elections Bill.

This is huge news for our democracy. 16 and 17 year olds will have the vote in the election. Extending the franchise is vital to nurturing more active citizens for the future health of our democracy.

As part of a new bill, the government is planning to reintroduce the Supplementary Vote system for mayoral and PCC elections.

This is a hugely welcome return, and a change we have been calling for – to put more choice back into the hands of voters.

New research shows that support for a fairer voting system has hit a new high.

This rise in support is no surprise. For too long, First Past the Post has distorted democracy, and the 2024 general election gave us the least representative parliament in British history.

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is only slightly better. We need electoral systems that work with the way we vote, not systems we have to work around.

We have never seen a mayor elected with this little support before. 25% of the vote translated into all the power, and money, the mayoralty brings.

As Westminster's First Past the Post system throws up more and more chaotic results, support is growing across the political spectrum to create a reliable, proportional, replacement. www.thetimes.com/article/b9d1...

As Prof Sir John Curtice said, we are entering a period of five party politics. Yet, we are burdened with an electoral system that barely handles two major parties. We are going to see councils and Mayors elected on Thursday, where the majority of local people are opposed to their policies.

House of Lords appointments are a broken system. The fact that an ex-Prime Minister is still able to use it to influence our laws is a case in point.

On May 1, there'll be mayoral and local elections held in many parts of England.

Know someone who's recently moved and might not be registered to vote in the elections? Make sure to remind them to register, or share this post with them.

It seems we touched a nerve in the House of Lords yesterday for highlighting that peers get paid £361 a day, tax-free, just for attending. Sign our 'Nasty Petition' for a smaller, democratically elected House of Lords today. ers.tools/house-of-lords

And in the UK, women's representation in the House of Commons is still troublingly low - despite reaching a record high since the 2024 General Election.
March 8, 2025 at 2:59 PM
The figures for global percentages of women in lower or single chambers paint a stark picture of underrepresentation.
March 8, 2025 at 2:59 PM
Thanks to the 2024 General Election, we now have a record number of women MPs in the House of Commons. That’s something to celebrate this #InternationalWomen’sDay.

But at home and around the world, there’s much work to be done to ensure that women are being fairly represented.
March 8, 2025 at 2:59 PM
🎉 The government is finally enacting Section 106 – a huge step forward for women’s representation in politics.

This is a huge win for transparency, fairness and democracy. Here’s why it matters...
