Counted means tabulated…basically. If your tracking says counted *before* 8pm on election night that means it is ready to be tabulated after 8pm on election night (when the law allows that first tabulation).

We have around 120k left to count after today's results - around 45k of which are from Seattle.

"Received" ballots are at the beginning of the process. They've gone through the sort machine and had their Ballot ID numbers logged into the system. After they've been received, they need their signatures verified, then to be opened, then to be scanned before they can be tabulated.

Spawning salmon end their journeys in their natal streams. Ballots in King County end their journeys back at Election Headquarters where the Elections team verifies each signature and opens every ballot by hand!

There are 85 drop boxes across King County. Each one weighs 1000 pounds, is secured in concrete with giant screws, and has multiple layers of security to protect your ballot on its journey back home to Elections Headquarters.
