Well it was a labeler that added a badge to a profile if they followed certain accounts, think a lot of right wing politicians, but due to unspecified misuse of it, the owner is shutting it down.

Solutions like this usually survive because somebodies boss who isn't tech savvy hears buzzwords and falls for the pitch and makes people implement it to their disgruntlement

Usually the unfortunate answer is, it's necessary because someone above you, got suckered into it because they don't know better and foist it off on you.
