Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC)
@eleanornorton.bsky.social
DC’s sole member of Congress. #DCStatehood
The bills the House passed tonight don’t make DC safer — they just replace the judgment of 700,000 residents with politicians from NY and GA.

I’ll keep fighting these intrusions on DC’s self-government and pushing for the remedy: #DCStatehood.

Violent crime in DC dropped 35% last year and is down another 28% this year, yet Republicans are acting as if we’re in a crisis that justifies extraordinary federal overreach.

I’m heading to the House floor today to oppose two anti–home rule bills and released my remarks ahead of the debate.

This holiday season, students from DC's Capitol Hill Christian Academy will have their art displayed with the National Christmas Tree!

I'm proud to share some of the ornaments designed by DC students.

This week the House will vote on two anti-DC bills.

The DC Council was elected by and is accountable to DC residents. Its members are the appropriate elected officials to make policy for DC, not Republican members of Congress representing the interests of far-away districts.

Constituents often contact me about the impact train noise and vibrations have on their health, quality of life, and the structural integrity of their homes.

I introduced a bill to establish a grant program for the design and construction of barriers to mitigate these harms.
November 17, 2025 at 4:14 PM
For 43 days, @HouseDemocrats stood firm to protect Americans’ health care and lower costs.

We’re not stopping now. We’ll keep building on this momentum until every American can afford the care they need.
November 13, 2025 at 3:18 PM
DC residents have fought and died in every American war, yet are still denied voting representation in Congress and full control over their own local affairs.

I introduced my annual resolution ahead of Veterans Day honoring their service and calling for #DCStatehood.

DC high school and college students: Come work for me! We’re now accepting applications for Spring 2026 interns. Apply by November 30th to be considered.

I joined my colleagues in a letter urging Speaker Johnson to extend the premium tax credits for small businesses.

In 2022, 3.3m small business owners had ACA coverage. Many wouldn’t have had coverage if not for the PTCs.

Small businesses will suffer if healthcare costs rise.e

Scientists predict that the tides on the East Coast could rise 2-4 feet by the year 2100, causing as much as $7 billion in DC property to be threatened by floodwaters.

I introduced my bill to make DC eligible for federal funding under the Coastal Zone Management Act.
November 4, 2025 at 1:26 PM
To highlight that DC is prepared for #DCStatehood, I introduced a bill to change the title of the DC Mayor to Governor, the DC Council to Legislative Assembly, Councilmembers to Representatives, and the DC Council Chair to Speaker.

The Trump Admin's reinstallation of the statue of Confederate Albert Pike is an affront to DC residents.

Pike took up arms against the US, misappropriated funds, and was captured by his own troops. He has no claim to be memorialized in the nation's capital.

I wish D.C.'s Hindu community a happy Diwali!
October 21, 2025 at 5:09 PM
As one of the largest advertisers in the US, the federal government must ensure fair access for small disadvantaged businesses and those owned by minorities and women.

I introduced a bill to require agencies to report the amount they spend on these contracts in their annual budget justifications.
October 21, 2025 at 2:02 PM
My daughter Katherine has Down syndrome, so President Trump's layoff of employees dedicated to supporting students with disabilities and their families is personal.

I joined Rep. Lucy McBath to urge the administration to rescind the termination notices sent to these employees.
October 20, 2025 at 3:18 PM
Pres. Trump signed a law entitling fed workers to backpay after shutdowns, yet his admin removed critical guidance explicitly stating that these employees will be paid when the shutdown ends.

I joined a letter led by Sen. Kaine asking OMB to affirm that furloughed employees will receive backpay.
October 15, 2025 at 7:19 PM
GAO has authority to conduct investigations and audits of federal agencies, but its authorizing statute incorrectly defines DC as a federal agency.

DC already has a local auditor and IG, so GAO's authority over DC is redundant and offensive. I introduced a bill to repeal it.
October 14, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Millions of federal employees, servicemembers and contractors face pay interruptions during the gov shutdown.

I joined a letter to regulatory agencies asking for immediate guidance encouraging financial institutions to offer flexible financial arrangements for these Americans.

The land we walk on carries the history of Indigenous peoples who have lived here since time immemorial.

Their stories, struggles, and triumphs are deeply rooted in our shared history. Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to reflect on that deep connection and the path forward.

Shutdown Day 10: Ten days without a functioning government is ten days too many. Families who depend on government services shouldn’t be collateral damage for political brinkmanship.

Republicans may be relaxing at home, but my office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
October 10, 2025 at 3:08 PM
DC shouldn't be penalized for Congress' disfunction, but many of DC's strictly local land use decisions are delayed during shutdowns because the Nat'l Cap Planning Commission and Commission of Fine Arts are federal agencies.

I introduced a bill to exempt them from shutdowns.
October 9, 2025 at 3:23 PM
Shutdown Day 9: Every additional day of this shutdown deepens uncertainty for federal workers, contractors, and the entire economy. It must end.

My office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
October 9, 2025 at 2:32 PM
Shutdown Day 8: The Republican shutdown jeopardizes housing assistance, food aid, and health programs that Americans depend on. Working families shouldn’t pay the cost of Congress’s dysfunction.

Republicans have left town, but my office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.

Today marks two years since the October 7th massacre, where 1,200 people were murdered and 250 were kidnapped.

Since then, Hamas has held Israelis hostage while scores of innocent Palestinians have died.

Now is the time to bring aid to Gaza, end the war and release the hostages.
October 7, 2025 at 6:52 PM
Shutdown Day 7: Beginning next week, National parks, museums, and cultural institutions in DC will be shuttered, depriving residents and visitors of cultural experiences that make DC special.

While Republicans relax at home, my office remains open and working for DC residents.
