Floppies were invented ca.1971, while hard disks (huge and expensive) existed since 1950s.

AFAIK, diskette was really a "small disk" in the other languages too. It was formed analogously to "cassette", using the same suffix, but isn't a portmanteau in the strict sense.

say, they had a graphics engine that draw directly in video memory, and 1) rewriting it into DirectX/OpenGL was too expensive while 2) drawing pixels on a window "surface", so that Windows could render them, was slow.
