if I understand correctly, it's an opposite of chainmail bikini: it covers abdomen leaving breast open (presumably because ribs provide some protection to the internal organs already, but also because Ancient Greece Was Horny, I guess)

…but MIDI playback varied across sound cards, so it could be a PITA for a freeware indie game.
And since it was made in 2001 when most DOS installations were also Windows installations, the folks decided: "ah, who cares?"

I think it's to ensure that the wiki engine converts those words into hyperlinks, nothing more
January 15, 2026 at 11:05 PM
IIRC the original engine made words with multiple capital letters into hyperlinks to the corresponding articles.

so many levels…

from reading the docs in the "Dev" archive, it plays MIDI using a separate VB program that uses windows MCI API (they communicate through mcmci.dat file.
Were the sources available, one could built a pure DOS version (I guess some patching would do the trick too)

ca 2000, before thumbdrives became a thing, we, the geeks, used to bring our HDDs when visiting each other, to exchange pirated mp3s, videos and warez.
There was a joke:
a cop stops a nerd who clearly hides something under his coat
- Hey, whatcha have over there?
- a winche…a hard disk, officer!

yeah, they are still occasionally called "winchester" (or, shorter, "wint") in Russian computer-related slang, although few remember the reason (IBM 3340 HDD originally was going to have 2 30M modules, reminding of the .30-30 cartridges of the Winchester model 1894 rifles)

The term "floppy disk" was an opposite to "hard disk".
Floppies were invented ca.1971, while hard disks (huge and expensive) existed since 1950s.

AFAIK, diskette was really a "small disk" in the other languages too. It was formed analogously to "cassette", using the same suffix, but isn't a portmanteau in the strict sense.

which was more or less what was happening in the real 30years war, right?
However, France and Austria were "traditional enemies" in EU4, which gave them a permanent opinion penalty and, I believe, decreased their chances of being on the same side. Not sure about EU5

Or they'd invested into some 3rd party tools/libraries (say, for video playback) for DOS and didn't want/couldn't to buy a Windows version as well
January 7, 2026 at 12:24 AM
say, they had a graphics engine that draw directly in video memory, and 1) rewriting it into DirectX/OpenGL was too expensive while 2) drawing pixels on a window "surface", so that Windows could render them, was slow.

Do we have information how other powers of Middle East (Achaemenids, Neo-Babylonians etc) allocated land for their warriors. I vaguely recall reading that it was intended to be rented out (but this memory could be wrong), so maybe the Hellenistic states followed that pattern?
