In universe I agree. I think this is also addressed with some handwaving in an episode of Enterprise when the transporters inventor comes on board under false pretenses.

No worries. I think it could be very relevant, if more good citizen were responsible for there religion, I think we’d all be better off. You’d get more MLKs and less human skin wearing monsters the current US admin bible beating admin is. You’re not wrong.

I frequently see atheist yelling at Jews, some of which are also atheist in principle. Im an atheist, I have a Christmas tree, I will on occasion attend a service with my older parents as a comfort for them. I have crosses in my house. I find beauty in the large stone cathedrals in Europe,etc.

So the downside of structured religion is that it relies on magical thinking and prey upon that vulnerability (and some people can wield that with more nefarious intent). That’s why it’s hard to treat religion with kid gloves. But I’d don’t necessarily disagree with your last posts.

Some people like to ruin stuff. But I think as whole the human race suffers because we have no natural defense to the harm that magical thinking can do. There is no evolutionary precedent in the same way we can’t naturally defend against the influence of social media or advertising.

I might have gotten too high on my soap box. I think my point was that literal religious interpret/practice would still be harmful and atheism still has valid criticism of religion even without Protestant literalism.

Yes the people who order the murdering do it for power or wealth, but they use religion and zealots to do the murdering. Did you miss the whole crusades bit of history? Or ever look at history book? The inquisition? It’s one of the most potent tools of otherism there is. Racism might beat it.

I wish the media in both our countries would grow a spine and stop treating these stories like it was normal. The headline should be “Racist man baby continues racist remarks”, stop the sane washing of this shit, stop legitimizing their perspective as if it has merit. US media is awful at it.

There are other religions that take things quite literally that aren’t Protestantism, that existed before, and would still exist in the vacuum, Islam being one of them. But people have been murdering other people for not sharing the same religious beliefs for literally 1000’s of years.

I’m sorry for your loss. For sure tragedy can make it hard to connect when things like that happen (or make it more difficult as the case may be). For me its been just grinding until you put some distance on things. In any case I hope you find some kinda peace, I know it can be tough.

If you can’t connect spiritually the normal ways, try leaning on some friends, or some meaningful music you haven’t played or picked up for a long time. For me sometimes heart and soul can be the same place. I hope you find something to lighten your burdens my friend.

Yes, it sounds like you’ve run into many a militant(jerk) atheist. I became unconvinced of christianity (or any religion) once I started questioning things, the bottom gave way so to speak. There is no way I could choose to be a believer. I’d have to come across evidence that was wholly convincing.
