Pulp Scifi aliens are my new thing!
They’re so weirdly wildly innocent.

Turns out, it can be way quicker and easier to flesh things out w opaque paint! All these years of pencils and watercolor, it just took forever. Also, wow, Naples Yellow and Venetian Red work great together! I think they may be my new fave color combo

I was making sculpey heads to light and paint, like Corben and other artists. They were going to be basic planes like a Loomis head, but then they start to look like sombody- and I chase that as far as I can- kind of a pygmalion thing, looks like a Skarsgard Nosferatu will visit too.

Here’s my li’l Jareth. That song and dance w the babe must be super sad for the goblins now, ‘cause they were all the babe once, but now they are no longer Jareth’s favorite- that’s cannon right? The babes all become goblins living with him, sad.

Hoo boy! Rollin’ a lotta snakes to bring old Sculpey back to life, and boy are my fingers tired. Found an extra guy in my old stock too!

Heh. He looks gross! I have an idea of where shadows go- it licked in my head in the 4th grade. I want to get a fresh eye on shadows. So I’m sculpting some basic heads to explore shadows and reflections.

Sometimes you HAVE to keep reworking a painting. Based on a Sanxingdui bronze mask. NOW I’m happy w the underpainting.

The Native people have a visual language in their wood carving. Each totem animal has it’s own visual queues- even Bigfoot.

Heard that magenta, cyan, and yellow paint could mix in richer blends- i guess I got the wrong colors- i got a nice brown and muddy purple but it wasn’t what I expected- portraiture is meh, but go look at Max Schreck. He was a pretty handsome guy but his performance as Nosferatu was shriekworthy!

Just what exactly does this visual
Metaphor mean? Fire in the bed is usually bad, unless it’s sex… then… really what does this mean?

So, would you choose to put down your art on whatever’s at hand? Or would you wait to get all your materials ready…
I choose the former- I’ve been unable to get shit down because of fussy little rules I made for myself. Is this the “Right” sketch book, aren’t you ONLY using oils now?

I AM TRYING!
Every painting is a lesson.

I am relieving myself of old guilt by painting over my incomplete High School paintings. I have carried them for so long. Promising them and myself that I would complete them one day. They are not bad, just the best 17 yr old me could do. They are white gesso now. Goodbye, I loved you.

At the Pergamon Museum I saw this delightful Roman platter (?) of hammered silver of baby Herculese. I’ve loved it ever since. Little did I know I would have a baby Herculese of my own, and he just turned 13! I do hope his Labors will be much much easier with none of that bad Herculean stuff either!

Egyptian Goddess- learning me paints- If I haven’t mentioned it, I’m dedicating this year to learning how to paint well with oils.
The “well” part is up to everyone else, LOL!

Tanit! I guess I made her my ambassador to the Western Mediterranean and the isles And shores therein. A worthy and forgotten goddess- she guided the sailors and the Carthaginians and showed me Menorca and the ancient taulas- also great seafood.
January 16, 2025 at 6:10 PM
Painting-wise this is where I’m at.
Now I want more detail, more tones, more colors, and bigger!
These are my 2025 goals- I am exclusively focused on oil paint this year.

The last five years written on the floor of a L.A. corporate office;
Adhesive stains from covid distancing, cracks from earthquakes and subsidence, air filters for the city fires… I still don’t want to be anywhere else.
