A great big black and white kitty faces the camera with two little kittens near him. This is Pepino, the big brother of the colony. He’s a gentle soul to all cats. Every kitten instinctively goes to him or hides behind him when frightened or unsure. His father, the late tomcat Big Fella, was also a gentle lad who refused to fight unless given no choice — Big Fella even brought a kitten (we named her Bunny) with him from God knows where and took care of her like a mother would, so Pep comes by it honestly. When the kittens grow up, no matter how long they’ve been parted from him, they always seem to remember him very fondly. Pep gets a gentle nose touch of remembrance from even the nerviest of cats — including our own Dustine, his biological little sister (who hates all other cats), who took refuge with him as a feral baby many times.

We learned that Theodore’s kind (Little Brown Bat) have been brutally cut down by white nose fungus, up to 90% in some areas. It’s vital that we help him & every bat asap. We’re picking out his box rn & figuring the logistics. #bats #nc #wildlife #batconservation #NorthCarolina #WakeCounty

A Little Brown Bat hangs quite saucily in the bedroom window of a house he does not own nor does he pay rent of any kind. He’s a freeloader, if you must know, but he eats bugs and he’s got really cute little feet. He goes out every night at dark to hunt, then returns at dawn to groom himself and sleep. We keep an eye on him throughout the day to be sure he’s alright. He looks good, a little chubby so he’s eating well, grooms himself frequently. Another angle of Theodore the Non-Chalant House Guest. He wintered with us for several weeks in total hibernation, then left in January ahead of a storm. We wished him well. Too well, perhaps, bc he’s back. We have the worst storm windows in the world, they jam open and it takes an act of God to move them again. There’s one in my bedroom that REFUSES to move to the point we may have to push it completely out of its track first (we bought the house with these awful flimsy windows installed) so it got stuck open last summer just a few inches — that’s all the encouragement Teddy needed, apparently. Little Brown Bats are endangered, you guys! They’ve been devastated by a terrible sickness and they need our help! Call your local wildlife service to see what you can do to support our little buddies!

I’ve had a hard day. Sometimes I really question my value as a human bc being in pain makes me feel worthless in a way that’s difficult to describe. Annie got on my bed this afternoon to visit & nap. She made me laugh a little at her kittenish abandon.
