More than a year ago, at a DIY house show in Pennsylvania, Jael was a little drunk and outta the blue asked a talented young visual artist if they’d make us a very special music video for a song off our debut album, “pink balloons”. We told this artist they could let their freak flag fly and do whatever they wanted, but we had one big request: We wanted to animate JK Rowling and Dave Chappelle f**king. Months and months later, this weird off-hand request turned into the most psychedelic and powerful visual of the entire album cycle, an “I Saw the TV Glow”-inspired triptych that serves as metaphor for the way bigotry as theatre helps destroy people and society. So as a coda to the “pink balloons” era, before Ekko Astral turns to something new, we will be debuting this final visual on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the kickoff date for Ekko’s first full U.S. tour. Liberation Weekend: The Trans Punk DIY Music Festival That Could Spark a Movement Across two days in Washington, D.C., local and national acts threw a sweaty party to publicly reject the Trump Administration’s anti-trans legislation and raise money for the Gender Liberation Movement. It was a festival that centered clarity, community, and a good-ass time.
